The first trailer for Starz' series of Neil Gaiman's American Gods is out.

This looks AMAZING. I love that book, and am really hyped to see what they'll do with it. Great casting, great atmospherics. Am having YUGELY BIGLY hopes for this thing.

Recently I made some remarks about Elijah's choice of residence, and how disappointed I am in him for it. I would not have expected him to be so insular and uninformed that he wouldn't know why downtown L.A. is such an ugly choice.

For those of you who don't know what's going on down there, here's a link that lays a lot of it out:

Skid Row, the homeless in L.A., and how the influx of Pretty And Rich is making life so much worse

This is not a new thing, but it's been accelerating over the last few years. I avoid the glitzy playground because, to be frank, I couldn't trust myself not to lay into those entitled richies and their assumption that no one else's life matters when it comes to their little whims.

How many cities have seen this happen? The rich decide to "clean up" a neighborhood by taking over the living accommodations that - however humble - give the poor a place to be. And with those dwellings go all the services that helped those poor people, because who needs 'em now, right? Then after a few years, the richies get bored and decide to move somewhere else, because they FUCKING CAN. And the area falls back again, but now the community that was there is gone, the services are gone, and the equilibrium that was established over decades is kaput. And of course, the people who used to live and work there are now doubly poor, the homeless are persecuted by the cops and by draconian laws enacted to make life NICE AND CLEAN for the fucking richies, who don't want to admit that their asshattery ruins lives. Rinse, repeat, endlessly.

Why the FUCK can't rich people just stay in their own fucking neighborhoods and stop with this egocentric OMG WE GON MAKE IT BETTER bullshit, I don't know. They really do think the world belongs to them, is exclusively their playground, and that no one else matters.

And yeah, I'm kind of pissed at Elijah for jumping into that. I mean seriously - DUDE. *glares*

This is so lovely...

Water Blessing Song Grand Invocation - Nalini Blossom

We pray for healing
Blessings of the water
We pray for healing
Blessings of the sea
We pray for healing
Blessings of the river
That they may flow in crystal purity

Uchu no mugen no chikara ga kore kotte
Makoto no daiwa no miyo ga nari natta

This beautiful song is based on Dr. Masaru Emoto's mantra for healing the waters of the earth. The translation of the mantra is:

The Eternal Power of the Universe has gathered Itself to create the World with true and grand harmony.

I find this mantra so peaceful and calming and loving. I use it as a walking mantra when I am out and about. Since I have no car, I have to walk a lot, and having a mantra really helps me center and be mindful as I walk, remembering to be in the moment and enjoy what I'm doing instead of thinking only of where I'm going to.

My other walking mantra is Gate Gate, a Buddhist chant that blesses those who travel.

The chant goes like this:

Gate gate parangate parasangate bodhisva

Gone, Gone,
Gone beyond,
Gone beyond the beyond,
Blessings on the journeyer and on the journey.

I love intentional music, that which is used in religious rituals, meditation, and other spiritual arts. I play long mixes of pagan and Buddhist music when I'm cooking and especially when I'm baking. It's very centering to hear such music when you're working with your hands to make something to nurture others. I sing the songs as I'm working, and intentionally channel the feelings of peace, love, and one-pointedness into the food I make.

AHAHAA. GREAT video I just found on Youtube:

Graham Norton gets the opinions of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy
on various pieces of slash fan art.

This is SO HILARIOUS. Graham really loves to trot out risque (and not so risque) fan art to flummox people on his show. He's done it to Daniel Radcliffe, and I would swear on the Goddess that he's done it to Elijah as well, but I can't find a clip of it on YT, damnit.

As someone who's done a little fanart and photomanipping (not to mention fics), I find these sections utterly wonderful. Daniel and Elijah were both gracious but clearly weirded out by it, poor dears. (My memory of Elijah was that he turned beet red but kept smiling and was quite calm.)

But this clip is the winner. Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy came on the show to promote X-Men, and it is really one of the best shows of Graham's I've seen. They are a fucking team, those three, so funny. And Graham did the fanart thing, this time it was original drawings instead of manips or fiction (ETA: Scratch that - I just watched again and they do talk about fics), and Michael and James are utterly hilarious as they deal with critiquing the artwork and commenting on the content. James is especially funny, his wit is so dry and lightning-fast.

I like these guys so much. A guy who can have fun with this sort of thing without being mean about it is a wonderful thing. Let's make more of them!

Note: If you hang on after the clip, you'll see their entrance in one of the little preview windows. Too. Much. Yum.

Here's something fun: Wil WHEAton is weirded out about this photo, and has asked his readers to explain it:

What's this guy's story?

You get 150 words to talk about the guy in that photo. At first, I thought, "What's the problem? He doesn't seem strange to me." But then I looked again, and got a little chime, and wrote a squib. Fun!

So take a look and jump in if you feel like it. :)

Here is a follow-up link to the post about the dual cast performance Josh took part in. This page at the BBC website has a video of Josh's Skype call to one of the students that wrote the monologue he performed. It's very sweet. She's a darling, and he's very kind to her.

Another discovery!

At this link to a CNN video, you'll see a report on an incredibly lovely project Josh was recently involved in: a simultaneous performance by one cast of young African students and another cast of famous actors, telling the same stories, all of them written by the students.

Hollywood stars and drama students perform the same script

And on this search page, you can see extended performances of a couple of the pieces briefly seen in the first video, performed by Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy:

Amazing, heartbreaking stories - do get a box of tissues before you watch it. (I was sobbing at one point.) I wish I could have seen this, and am hoping it was recorded for release.

So I've been grooving on Bowie's music all day, giving thanks to the Goddess for his existence, and to him for the great gift of art he gave us all. And I realized that my favorite of his albums is not any of the ones you might think, but rather his best-selling one: Let's Dance.

I think it's genius. Who else could have rescued disco from the ash heap of music history and made dancing bright and fun and hot and COOL again? Nobody I can think of. And yet he pulled it off (with help from his friend Niles Roger, of course). I love these tracks. They swing. An old-fashioned term, but the only one that fits. They take you by the hips and make you want to MOVE.

And I fucking love that.

Modern Love

China Girl

Let's Dance

(Note the album cover image, which you see in that last viedo - another example of Bowie's cutting humor, as "let's dance" is a fighting term as well as an invitation to dance.)

So yeah, along with Starman (my favorite Bowie song) and Rebel Rebel, his "disco-era" stuff - Fame, Young Americans, Golden Years - and the Let's Dance album are really my favorites. I much prefer music that makes me want to move rather music that makes me angry or sad. The Berlin period may have been more innovative, but it's just not stuff I want to listen to. THIS is what I listen to - the Bowie that moved, that danced, that laughed. The Bowie that knew life is worth living.

Here's a wonderful tribute to Bowie from Nile Rogers, the head of the disco group Chic and the guy Bowie chose to partner with for his biggest selling album, Let's Dance.

David Bowie Changed My Life

He talks about how his career was basically over when he ran into Bowie, who took to him as a friend and collaborator instantly. It's really a sweet, touching story, proving yet again that Bowie had a talent for seeing, for connecting, and for seizing the moment to make something amazing.

I've hung onto this for a while, but now seems like a good time to post it. Enjoy this little burst of heat! Blessed Solstice to all!

Casey backs up against the door as Zeke leans into him. He’s still hot and shaky from the ride over, from the dirty little interlude behind the gas station, but even so, he’s on guard as well. He can’t completely trust this guy, not yet. Still, here he is, overshadowed by that long, sinuous body and hot, amused look. The soft lips graze his...

Here's another great writing tool, courtesy of Metafilter:

Writing Exercises from John Gardner's The Art of Fiction

A series of hard-core writing exercises to help you sharpen up your skills as a storyteller. I call them hard-core because they're very focused and no-nonsense. Here's the first one:

1. Write the paragraph that would appear in a piece of fiction just before the discovery of a body. You might perhaps describe the character’s approach to the body he will find, or the location, or both. The purpose of the exercise is to develop the technique of at once attracting the reader toward the paragraph to follow, making him want to skip ahead, and holding him on this paragraph by virtue of its interest. Without the ability to write such foreplay paragraphs, one can never achieve real suspense.

They're all like that - do exactly this, and here's why you should do it. They're all intriguing exercises, at least to me, because they isolate specific things that are key to good storytelling and give you ways to work on those things. Not areas, mind you. Things. I really like that, the one-pointedness of the prompts, as well as the insistence on focus and outcome. (Each of them leaves you with this implication of "and don't fuck around" that amuses me. I keep envisioning Sister Mary Ignatius, with her imperious glare and her long ruler, waiting for us to take our seats. Anne Bancroft really should have played that role, alas. But I digress.)

Anyway, I think this is another great thing to put in one's bookmarks. It's the kind of thing that's great for writer's block too, of course. Enjoy! :)

It's a bit late maybe, but it's still Veterans Day here, and I just remembered that I wanted to post this. A link to a story I wrote some years ago for the day.

Soldier's Wife
by Serai

Some nights she goes out and looks at the stars, staring up into the depths until she’s dizzy, losing herself in the brilliant spill of light, wrapped in it as if in place of his arms. Some nights she can’t look at them at all, and they are her enemies, have torn his arms away from her.

She doesn’t dare admit what she knows is true, hidden deep down where she can’t look at it...

Ever wish for an app that would just throw story ideas at you? Well, here's the next best thing:

Magic Realism Bot

That's a wonderful twitter feed for a bot that culls and aggregates the plots of magic realism stories. It tweets one every two hours. Some great examples:

A hermit finds a mirror which reflects insanity.

During a solar eclipse all the stars are replaced by birth.

A Maltese viceroy builds a Coliseum made of emeralds.

A medieval book describes a world where everything is made of sadness.

There is a storm in China. It rains eyes.

...and so on. Lots of little idea flashes in there, so I think it's worth bookmarking for when nothing is tickling the old writing bone. :)

GREAT thread going on at Metafilter today:

Baby Hitler: Jeb! got asked if he would go back in time and kill Hitler as a baby. Hilarity ensues.

The comments are a riot. Metafilter has a lot of very erudite and funny people in its community. My two favorites are the link to the International Association of Time Travelers bulletin 1147, and this:

Say what you will about Hitler, but at least he killed Hitler.

Fucking great stuff, with lots of fun links. Do go and enjoy. :)

“You’re certifiable, you know that?” Zeke’s leaning against the tiled wall, arms crossed. He wishes for the hundredth time that he could see the way Casey does, because he has no idea what the guy’s going for here.

“Shut up,” Casey answers, smiling down from his perch on the ladder...
