News on The Hobbit

.

This article has the latest news on the on-again-off-again New Line Hobbit project.

Seems Shaye and PJ have been talking quietly, and fences are being mended. PJ won't be directing, but he'll be involved, probably as producer.

Things are looking up!

Why on earth not? He's an excellent director. Have you seen A Simple Plan or The Gift? Don't judge him just because he's famous for ghoulie films. (Which, by the way, was the only thing Peter Jackson had ever done before LOTR, and look how he turned out.) Don't knock horror films - directors that do those learn an enormous amount about filmmanking in a very short time, and those films teach them to handle FX and CGI better than just about any other type of cinema.

I'd be a lot more leery of some Serious Dramatic Filmmaker or some guy completely puffed up with his own success (like Scott or Spielverg) than of someone like Sam Raimi, who has both the chops, the sense of humor, and the hunger to pull off something like The Hobbit.

I wasn't knocking him for doing horror movies, I haven't watched any of them - I don't watch horror films - and anyway I knew that was what PJ was (mostly) famous for before LotR too.

I was juding him on Spiderman. While I think he did an adequate job for that style of film I'm having a hard time imagining the realistic rich world of PJ's LotR being echoed in the Hobbit. Though I might be totally wrong because people are always full of surprises.

God I would never want someone like Spielberg or Scott doing it either the styles of films they do are totally different to the world of Middle Earth captured in the trilogy. I haven't spent time thinking of who I'd want, but Sam Raimi, as much as I like the guy and his brother, wasn't the first person who I would've jumped at to be selected for it.
