Update on Frodo

Just called the vet's. They've removed the catheter and he's peeing okay. They're asking me if I want to leave him there until Monday in case he blocks up again. The vet never mentioned that when I saw her, and she's not there now. Opinions?

It might be easier to leave him there than to try to take him back if he does block up over the weekend.

I think I would have to have questions answered before making that decision. Were there stones, or just crystals? Do they think they got them all out? What is the percentage chance that he would get blocked up again? How well did he recover from the procedures they did, and how is he handling the environment - is he groggy or upset? Ultimately medicine (animal or human) is an art as much as it is a science, and there are very few guarantees either way, but they ought to be able to give you an informed opinion. That is what you are paying them for. And if the vet isn't there, I bet she is available by phone, at least to them.

just saw your note on Frodo. So sorry, I know this problem is really scary. 2 years ago my ginger tom also couldn't pass his urine, poor guy. scared me really badly....i mean, you HAVE to peed to live. over a period of about a week he ended up being cathed 3 times, despite being seen and treated by a top rated vet service. They couldn't pin down the source of the problem nor fix it. I ended up opting to have them totally remove his penis----the uretha is wider where it leaves the bladder and narrows when it passes through the penis, cutting back to that wider section of the uretha gave him his best chance of being able to pee. he recovered well and has had no problem since, but he does look exactly like a girl. So if you have to go this far, it's a good option. write me if you want more detail.
