TO all you folks that like to rec stuff:

This has happened more than a few times, and I'm at the point of having to say something about it.

Please check and make sure that the story or post or poll - whatever - that you're recommending is actually viewable by the public BEFORE making the rec.


Because, believe it or not, those of us that see your rec may actually want to read the thing. And clicking your link and finding out that it's locked is kinda like having somebody hold out an ice cream, saying "You want some?" and then snatch it away when we reach for it, saying "Too bad!!" It's annoying and frustrating, and it can cause resentment because the reader then has to go beg to be let on somebody's list in order to see it, whatever it is.

This is not conducive to a pleasant experience, and it will not get you any points with the people reading your LJ. So please make the effort and check first, and if it's locked, don't rec it.

If you ask, the poster will ask the writer to friend you. It may be a bit of a hassle, but I've met some great friends that way and found some wonderful writers. How else do you meet someone who locks their posts?

I'm sorry if that's happened to you because of something I recced. I'll be more than happy to ask the person to friend you if you just let me know. I've done it several times for other folks.

But I'm with Mews. She has introduced me to many new authors through her recs, and has helped me get friended before.

I've been guilty of doing it myself but it annoys me when any locked post is linked, especially if the poster is making a big f'in deal about it. "OMG OMG WHAT DID YOUGUYS READ THIS-"

Word on the not reccing locked fics. It's annoying as hell to the reader and makes the author look as if they're holding their fic to ransom rather than just wanting to keep it private.
