.

I'm just watching footage of Richard Gere being burned in effigy over in India.

Richard Gere.

Being burned in effigy.

The world has officially gotten too weird for me.

ETA: This made me ROFL -

Jon: Where would you even get a Richard Gere effigy?

Aasif: Well, you just take a Josh Hartnett effigy and age it about 30 years.

Over a kiss, no less.

Strange times...

And a kiss on the cheek!

That's taking life a tad too seriously.

Yeah millions of people starving to death in their country and they get worked up over a kiss on the cheek. Great priorities.

Apparently it was at some public appearance, something about sex education or birth control or some such, and he was laughing with the lady who was up on stage with him. Then he put his arms around her and bent her over his arm and started kissing her cheek. She kinda rolled her eyes at the camera and laughed.

But maybe he didn't know that men and women aren't supposed to touch AT ALL in public over there. A whole shitload of people are really REALLY fucking pissed off about it. Personally, I think it's a ridiculous thing to get so ticked about. As [livejournal.com profile] starlit_woods says above, they got people starving in the streets, but this is what's worth getting hysterical over. Go figure.

Well, few people seem to give a shit about what Gandhi said anymore.

Oh, I forgot to mention that along with burning Gere in effigy, they're also calling for the DEATH of the woman he kissed. She's a film actress, I believe.

I guess while karma covers all those starving people, it doesn't have anything to say about a kiss in public.

You gotta wonder about all these deities that are so incapable of taking care of problems like these, thus forcing their followers to act like complete assholes to take up the slack.

From what I understand from an Indian friend, him kissing her on stage was like getting to 3rd base and going for home in public. Then her (my friend's) father added, "And people still wonder why we left 'such a beautiful and exotic country'."

The more I work with vendors in Asia, the more I realize how screwed up India is. The VP of our department has even instituted an unofficial ban on using Indian vendors, because of the deplorable conditions in the factories. (When we were looking at one, the vendor sent pictures of his factory, the people were sitting on a dirt floor making scarves, and then he started going on about how benevolent an employer he was because he provided mattresses and sex-segregated dorms!)

Sheesh. Puts me in mind of a friend of mine who'd taken a vacation there because he was a big music fan. He too found it a thoroughly fucked up place. When I mentioned the word exotic, he immediately answered, "There's nothing exotic about India!" The poverty and callousness really freaked him out, too.

It gets really depressing doing business internationally, and seeing how so many things and attitudes we take for granted are non-existent for most of the people in the East. Even with China, vendors will often outright lie to us. At least the company I'm working for is reaching the stage where we can start using green vendors who take care of their employees.
