I cannot begin to describe how nuts this is. And in Italy??? Holy shit, that's some serious asshat crazy there.

What I find most boggling is that he's getting any attention at all. I'd expect a big, country-wide raspberry blown in his direction, frankly.

Although on my travels there, I found in Northern Italy that there was less garlic in dishes than I expected which was great because if I eat it, it stays in my system for days - not good if no one else in your vicinity is eating it. :) I suspect we all have our images of what national foods are like. Friends from India laughed at my amazement when they made me their version of curry -which wasn't the eyeball exploding experience I expected it to be.

Danm Italy, damn stupid newspapers and damn idiot politics! During these months here we are drowning in trash-news like that, load of nonsense news set about to avoid the important information. Our Cabinet is about to collapse, our Prime Minister is unfit, the Opposition is even more creepy, our taxation is from 30% to 50% of the salaries and live is hard for more and nore families. All our political class prefer to talk of garlic than speach of our real problems and then lose their power. Shit!

Sorry for the tirade but I coldn't restrain myself. And now I'm going to prepare lunch: spaghetti aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil), lot of garlic!!!

AHAHAHA. You should start a political protest - getting everyone to eat garlic and rub garlic on themselves so they smell like it all the time. You could all go and hang out with signs outside his office, and stink up the air for miles.

Seriously though, thanks for the venting. (I had hoped you'd show up and explain this, since you're the only LJ'er I know in Italy, Este.) Your comment really puts this in perspective, as I'm sure you know we here in America are now EXTREMELY familiar with the idea of politicians trying to distract the people from real problems. It's such a stupid and cowardly thing to do. If they can't do their jobs they ought to own up to it, not wave their arms and yell, "Look over there! It's the Winged Victory of Samothrace!!" while they pick everyone's pockets and run away.

No, I'd actually expect the food to be different in Northern Italy. One of my aunts lives there, and my parents have stayed with her a few times. But garlic is rather part of the national image, and banning it is insane, whether it's a common food or not. It's one of the healthiest ingredients that people use in their foods, and I love the smell of it. (My dad still makes fun of America for taking so damn long to realize that garlic is a good thing to put in one's food - when he first got here in '59 people were horrified at the idea of eating it. Smelly, low-class immigrant thing, don't you know.)

Look at the faces of Berlusconi & Prodi (Opposition and Prime Minister), they are like the bottom of a head of garlic.
