Oi! Mush!

.

Apropos of nothing at all, I am suddenly in a literary frame of mind. Thus for the edification of you all, I direct you to this masterwork:

The Skinhead Hamlet

A classic of literature rendered in modern English. As the editors state, "Our hope was to achieve something like the effect of the New English Bible."

Discuss.

I love this!

This is my period (I'm a not-very-good - er, a little bit good - English Renaissance scholar and now high scool teacher) and while I think more might have been made of Gertrude . . .

I've been teaching Hamlet to my year 12 students for 4 years . . . they'd be intrigued (??!!**!) by this version

but

we can't say 'fuck'!! at my school . . .

and btw: I hate the New English Bible with a passion.

*grin* I'm glad you like it. It would be a good thing to turn students on to, wouldn't it? You could try recommending a wonderful book called The Friendly Shakespeare. It's a compendium of all kinds of things Shakespearean, divided up in sections, one for each play. It's got all kinds of anecdotes, facts, bits of interviews with Shakespeare performers, directors, scholars. A little of everything, and very engagingly written. The Skinhead Hamlet is mentioned in the book.

Love it! Distilled to its essence, with a lovely ear for language; witty, pithy, and brief.
I want to perform it on the Town Common.
... better give my lawyer a call ...
