Just came back from the Return of the One Party, and reeling from overload and lack of sleep.
A wonderful event, full of fun, and absolutely the best place to have watched this Oscar night from. Can't tell you what an experience it was to leap from my chair shrieking simultaneously with 1000 other fans when PJ won for Best Director. I swear, it was like being at one of my fondly remembered rock concerts from back in my youngun' heyday.
After the ceremony, I went to scarf down some of the very fine food, then headed back up to the main hall to secure a spot for the inevitable showing of LOTR folk. And show they did (after some fine music)!!
The first to stick his head out was JRD, who, after a little comic fiddling with mikes that wouldn't work, said gracious words to the fans letting us know how much everyone involved with the films appreciated our support.
The next to show was my Angelboy ELIJAH!! (Sorry, AngelMAN - force of habit, you know.) He was sweetness itself, grinning and kidding with the crowd, and informing us that LOTR had apparently made Oscar history as the first film to ever sweep the awards like that. His eyes sparkled, his skin shone and he was just the yummiest thing on two legs!
He came out again a bit later to introduce a band that are friends of his, who had come to play a few songs for us. I believe they're called "Rogue Without Sundance" (whatever that means), though I could certainly be mistaken - the mikes were sometimes a bit feedbacky. They are a very hot band, and I don't recommend bands these days lightly. Dom came out and sang a song with them - yowling in classic rock'n'roll fashion. Couldn't understand a single word! But it was great fun to watch him get his bad self down. (It was also fun to watch him and Elijah kiss the lead singer on the mouth, but that's another kettle of fish...)
When the LOTR gang trooped onstage, waving their gold statues triumphantly, I don't think I've ever been more excited. They were positively glowing, and it was a true joy to watch them bask in this amazing moment. PJ spoke enthusiastically about the journey of producing the film, and all the great people involved. He introduced each of the winners, who then came forward to tell us about how proud they were to be part of these films, and how much they appreciated each other and US, the fans!
Philippa joked about how she'd tried and tried to write Aragorn's shirt off, but it somehow always got written back on, heheh! PJ told a great anecdote about Dom embarrassing Elijah into a fit during a blind Q&A with German journalists (he said they have the video on both sides of that conversation, and IT WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE ROTK EE!!) Fran gave a sweet and breathless little thank you.
At one moment, Dom and Elijah (who'd clearly been drinking quite a bit of beer) actually told the audience "We're here to answer your questions" and said they'd answer anything! (I thought, "Uh-oh, you don't know what you've just stepped into!") The one they answered was "Boxers or briefs?" Dom gave a rather smug smirk and revealed, "I don't wear anything!" (You should have heard the shrieks for THAT one!) And Elijah sort of wrinkled up his face apologetically (and adorably!) and admitted "Boxers!" (Heehee! Not a Speedo man, it seems...)
Lots of lovely speechifying and thanking of the fans, then they all trooped out. After a few minutes, Billy (who'd arrived late) came out on stage and said a few words. When he tried to leave, the crowd exhorted him to "Sing! Sing! Sing!" So he borrowed a guitar from the Emerald Rose guys, and sang a great song about a girl named Jean, who had "Let me get lucky with you!" A rousing ditty, and he really put his heart into it, roaring the chorus over and over at the end. It was wonderful, and we were all very into it.
By then it was almost 1:00 am, and I felt too squeezed out by emotion and adrenaline and sheer joy to continue. So I wandered about saying bye to people, picked up my very generous goody bag and hightailed it home.
I'm so very, very grateful to the TORn folks for putting on these amazing parties (even though I missed the first one cause I didn't know anything about TORn that year), and especially THIS party, which was so enjoyable, and will live in my memory. I got to meet folks I'd been corresponding with on LJ, have the best community event experience I've EVER had, hear words of such love and gratitude from these people for whom I feel such love and gratitude myself. And of course, I got to squee endlessly over my darling Elijah, who is just the cat's meow! *sigh*
(My only pout came from the fact that Sean A. did not show up to see us. Perhaps he just wanted to head home to his family, which I can understand - the ceremony is said to be an exhausting experience. Still though...pout)
I don't think I can ever put into words how completely indebted I feel to PJ, Fran, Philippa, Barrie, Richard, Mark, Alan, John, Ngila, Dan, Elijah, Dom, Billy, Sean, Viggo, Liv, Ian, and all the other unbelievably gifted people who've given YEARS of their lives to this incomparable project (and some of them still doing so, like the FX guys whom Peter pointed out still have 350 effects shots to create for the EE!!)
My heart is so full of emotion tonight - I wish I could hug the whole world!!!
(PS. Sorry for the rabid fangirling but...well, you know.) ;)
ETA - I now know from
undone27, who was on the other side of the room, that the band's name is "World Without Sundays"! Heehee! When I heard the name last night, I was thinking, "What the fuck does THAT mean?? Oh well - band name!" I'm glad to find out it makes a little more sense than what I heard!
And here's their website, where you can write to them and order their CD - I'm sure going to!!
