Why did Carter back off on his Bush blast?Text of the article here:
( When Democrats Collapse. )I love Bill Maher, really. As a person, he is an unmitigated asshat, but his writing is superbly sharp, and he's one of the best comedic gadflies we've got. Those of you who aren't familiar with him should look him up on Youtube or Google Video, because the above is far more effective if you know his tone and his style of speech. When he gets going on how stupid someone is...I wouldn't want to be on the other end of it. The guy's rendition of
AWWW Poor Poor You! goes right for the money every time. He's harsher than Jon Stewart, but only at people who are either completely ridiculous or real scum, and so no apologies are necessary. (By the way, Carter's not the one he aims it at here, just so you know.) With Jon, there's always that sense of basic decency, but Bill doesn't strike me that way at all. He
does mean those people ill, and they deserve it, and that makes his comedy meatier than Jon's, (though not so expert and precise as Stephen Colbert's).
And you know, when things are going the way they are now, we need people like this. People who'll say what exactly what they mean, and if you don't like it, FUCK YOU. Bill's lost two television shows over saying things other people didn't like, and he still comes back fighting. There's a lot to admire in that.
