What I can do
Thursday, January 14th, 2010 04:49 pm.
Okay, I really want to do something for the people in Haiti, but I ain't got much in the way of money. But there is something I can do.
Years ago I was an eBay seller. I sold published materials - books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, things like that. I specialized in Japanese movie magazines, those beautiful glossy things that put American mags to bitter shame. And I still have a TON of those things around here, as well as many, many packages of clippings from American and international mags, on lots of movie stars.
So I'm offering them for sale to anyone who wants them. Minimal shipping cost (just enough to cover expenses), and the rest goes to charity for Haiti. With as much of this crap as I've got lying around, I could send at least $1000 if people were interested in the stuff I've got.
So I need a little input. I'm setting up an LJ where I will post the things I've got so people can get them from me, and then I can pass the money along. But I need to find out which charities will take Paypal donations. I don't have a credit card and downloading the money from Paypal to my bank account would take a few days for each transaction. Has anyone come across a good charity for this that will take direct payments from Paypal?
I've done this sort of charity thing before for fellow LOTR fans, but this is a lot more serious. And I'm thinking maybe the reason I've hung onto all this stuff for so long (thinking I could make money on it "some day") is that it's supposed to make money for people who actually NEED it. So any advice you have would be really helpful. I'll start putting stuff up as soon as I've settled on where the money will go.
Thanks, all!

So I've set up the LJ. It's over here:
magsforhaiti
I'm going to start posting items the morning of this Sunday, January 17. So if you're interested, or you know anyone who'd like to donate money to Haiti relief AND get something cool in the process, friend the journal and let people know.
P.S. I'll be listing a BUNCH of LOTR stuff, so you hobbit people will have stuff to covet.
