This is beautiful.

In Newsweek magazine, Anna Quindlen asks the oddly ignored question,

"If abortion becomes illegal, what sentence should the woman receive?"

And here's the video referenced in that article:

How Much Jail Time?

Lee Goodman asks anti-abortion demonstrators a rather uncomfortable question.

You know, for people who are so adamantine about their opinion on this matter, they seem to have spent precious little time actually thinking the thing through to its logical conclusion. They want abortion made illegal, but they completely shy away from even thinking about what to do with the person who actually set the "crime" in motion. This is exactly like saying that contract killing should be a crime, but we shouldn't punish the guy who pays for the hit. Right. That's logic.

I'm with Quindlen on this one: The reason they squirm and squirrel about when asked the question, clearly not wanting to answer it, is because if illegal abortion did include punishment for the women, the populace would overwhelmingly be against overturning Roe vs. Wade. Who wants to put desperate women in jail for wanting to control their own lives? Much easier to point the finger at the diabolical doctors. Friggin' scientists are all in collusion with Satan, anyway.

ETA: Apparently, the owner of the video requested that embedding be withdrawn for it. It is, however, still up at Youtube, and you can see it HERE

Well you have to at least admire the consistency of the one woman who said life in prison could be a possibility. The rest held firm to their inconsistent and illogical beliefs.

Honestly? No, I don't admire her consistency. Irrational beliefs do not excite my admiration. The fact that she can answer the question doesn't make her answer any less distasteful. But that's just me.

Y'know... I never posed this question to myself, LOL!
I've never liked the idea of abortion, but the one thing I've made clear to myself is that it's not my damned decision if someone ELSE makes that choice. I wouldn't make it for myself, unless I was going to DIE or something... but that's me. I can't stand self-righteous people that do this kinda crap.
LOVE their waffling and stammering and lack of knowledge. It only makes the case against them that much more stronger.

Ditto what you said. I read this and realized I never asked myself that either, even though I disapprove of abortion and would try to talk, say, a sister out of it. But I'm not religious, I do respect science, I would never stand outside clinics and yell at people (on any subject at all, actually; I mean, it's so unseemly and I doubt it helps the protesters' case one bit), and I don't actually wish to see abortion made illegal. Similarly, I disapprove of cheating on one's significant other, but I wouldn't want that to be illegal either. I like to hope law enforcement has bigger issues on their plate.

So therefore perhaps it isn't a question I needed to ask myself anyway. Still, interesting food for thought, and I feel better off for having stopped to consider it.

There are just too many things people would want to outlaw, giving punishment out to ANYONE they don't agree with. If someone doesn't like kissing in public...? What, outlaw it? Just stupid. *sigh* If people respected difference in the world, it'd be a much better place to live in.

The video, and the article, too, both very interesting. Thank you.

Why do you suppose this video is "no longer available"?

It's actually still up at Youtube, but apparently the owner asked for embedding to be withdrawn. I've amended this post to add the link to the Youtube page, so you can still see it. :)

Typical fundie braintwats, really. Like Bushie-Boy, who throws big rocks at a beehive in Iraq, then scratches his pointy chimp head and cain't figger out why they just don't like us any more. They have no concept of cause-and-effect. They want abortion GONE...but they sure as hell don't want to fund HeadStart, WIC, food stamps, education, universal medical coverage, immunizations, or all the other things all those babies will require.

The ones who only want to punish the doctors want to infantilize women -- it's bad enough we're allowed to vote and own property these days, God forbid we can actually understand the consequences of making big medical decisions. (For some reason, they have no problem accepting a 15-year-old's medical decision to become a poverty-stricken unwed teen mother several times over, but a 45-year-old doesn't know her own mind if she comes in for an abortion.)

And of course they're against real sex education, birth control, and all the rest of the stuff that would actually PREVENT so many abortions. If it weren't for keeping their girls ignorant, most of these ugly-ass male anti-abortion guys wouldn't be able to get laid in the first place.
