Ah, you've missed the point of the piece. Sam isn't talking to hobbits in the Shire. This piece was written one night after I'd been surfing for fics and found one too many stories making Rosie out to be an obstruction, or a shrew, or someone Sam was "forced" to marry. Suddenly I heard his voice in my head, and I rushed to write down everything he said, which was his reaction to those stories. He didn't much like anyone badmouthing his wife, and he still doesn't. He had a lot to say, and I feel like I just took dictation. :)
