How awful for the poor toddler! But the "filled with demons" part sounds almost classic for paranoid schizophrenia. I'll bet they find out the guy had serious mental problems and never should have been alone with the child to begin with. :-(

Unfortunately that guy should have been strung up and beaten within an inch of HIS sorry life. Anyone that harms a child should be taken out and stoned. And within the past few days, I've seen several other stories that just make me want to scream: the man and woman in NC that tied their 13 yr old son [now deceased] to a tree for 2 nights running for being "disobedient" - he had signs of beatings as well; the two women [21 and 18] here in CA that are on trial for beating and burning the 5 yr old boy of the 21 yr old [which means she was 16 when he was born - and where are HER parents??]- luckily he's recovering in the hospital.

Now I'm as liberal as the next person when it comes to the right to bear children or not, but I'm beginning to wonder...if you need a license to drive or have a dog, you need to be at least 21 in most states to drink legally, you have to be a citizen and 18 to vote...WHY THEN can just anybody with reproductive organs have children???

That's utterly disturbing, and disgusting. The guy was obviously insane, and the world is indeed a better place without him in it. Poor little boy... *shudders*

This is something that has been puzzling me for years. Also if you look at the complicated and dragging procedures couples have to go through if they want to adopt a child, but anyone who is physically able can have a child without anyone monitoring. I guess it's a tricky thing. Forcing people to get a license to have children would surely be taking away some basic rights. But in some cases it would definitely be better. It's a difficult subject.

Well, rights are bestowed by the society that one lives in. You may want the right to burn down a great public building, but chances are you aren't going to get it. I've always thought it ridiculous that people can just reproduce willy-nilly without accountability. That worked fine when the population of the world could be counted in the millions, but today? It's a health hazard for humanity as a whole, not to mention the damn planet and all the other species that live on it. There isn't a single problem facing this world that wouldn't be better if the population were half what it is now.

I totally agree. I meant, if there was such a thing as a license to have children, I'm sure there would immediately be people demonstrating against the 'injustice,' and the 'breach of human rights,' etc, and it would become a big thing. But maybe, ultimately, things would be better for everyone. The thing is: where do you start? How do you decide who is and who isn't fit to be a parent? Unfortunately, when someone isn't, it's usually discovered when it's already too late. But something definitely has to be done. The mounting number of accounts of people mistreating their children in unimaginable ways is staggering.
