BIG WARNING (and a little picspam)

HEADS UP, EVERYONE!

I just received an email in my inbox purporting to be from LiveJournal. Here is the text:

Dear user of "Livejournal.com" mailing system,

Some of our clients complained about the spam (negative e-mail content)outgoing from your e-mail account. Probably, you have been infected by a proxy-relay trojan server. In order to keep your computer safe, follow the instructions.

For details see the attach.

For security reasons attached file is password protected. The password
is "00257".

This email came along with an attachment, which I was supposed to open to get the solution referred to in the email itself.

Well, sir, the similarity to a number of "spoof" (i.e. fake) emails that I've gotten from ripoff artists claiming to be part of eBay, or Paypal, etc., made me suspicious, so I emailed the folks here at LJ. I got this reply:

Dear Serai,

You are correct that this email did not come from LiveJournal.com. DO NOT open the attachment. For more information about this recent spoof mailing, please see this entry from the News journal: http://www.livejournal.com/users/news/76799.html.

So a virus is sent around, cloaked as an attempt to protect you from a virus you supposedly already have. Pretty damn clever, that.

Anyway, if any of you get this thing, for Goddess' sake, DON'T OPEN IT!! Hit Delete right away.

Sorry the pic isn't up to my usual standards. The original is very small, and printed in an American mag to boot (Variety, in case you're wondering), which pretty much guarantees crappy printing that's hard to clean up. Man, those Japanese mags can really spoil you!

Oh, love the pic! That is so sweet and begs for a caption contest, I think.

Re: the attachment stuff. Yes, they are getting more and more clever. I never open any attachments unless I know the person sending it and their email address is familiar.

Thanks so much for posting this warning, though. That letter did sound official and real--bastards!
