.

Took my first Vicodin yesterday.

A little background: the doctor I've been seeing for the shoulder impairment prescribed these things last year, and I've had the bottle sitting around since last May. He first prescribed actual Vicodin, but I got a bit pissed and said I didn't want any addictive drugs, thank you. He then turned around and gave me a scrip for hydrocodone, thinking I'd just take it without question. Uh, no. I googled it and found out that it's...Vicodin. The generic name. Fucking hell.

So it's been sitting in my medicine cabinet ever since. But on Monday I somehow managed to yank a muscle in my other shoulder, hard. I mean REALLY hard. Don't know how I did it. I just reached to get a jar off my kitchen cabinet, which isn't even above shoulder height, and RRRRANGGGGG!!! OWGODDAMNNITOWOWOWOWOW!!! You know how that is? FUCK.

So after two days of suffering, I thought FUCK THIS and decided to take one of those yellow Pills From Hell. If it would help the pain go away, I'd risk it. I drank a glass of OJ and took the motherfucker, laid down on my heating pad and waited.

I gotta say, I have NO IDEA why anyone takes this shit other than for real pain. It's DREADFUL. I HATE IT. Yeah, I got high, but it's a woozy, nauseous, dizzy kind of high. I felt like I'd just got off a fucking rollercoaster that really upset my stomach. Disgusting. And you know, it didn't even knock the pain out, just lessened it to where it wasn't making want to punch myself in the head. I couldn't WAIT to come down.

It did seem to help though, as I woke up this morning to very reduced ouchness. It's still sore, but not anywhere near as bad as it has been. I figure by Saturday I should be mostly okay if I don't push it.

But DAMN...I really don't get the illicit use thing. This is the LAST high I'd call fucking fun. Other than Ketamine, that is. Anyone who takes THAT is a goddamn lunatic.

I was given a couple after my shoulder surgery last fall and yeah, I don't get it, either. It is strange how functional you can be (at least, I could be) on it.

If I may ask, what's the issue with your poor shoulder?

The physical and emotional reactions to this one cover a very wide range. (Beware possible intestinal shutdown.)

Hope breaking the pain cycle helps the improvement continue.

*hugs*

I have what's called a "shoulder impingement" as a result of a cumulative injury at work in 2007. The condition means that basically my shoulder joint has gotten misaligned somehow so that it's now pinching part my muscle in the joint, which limits my use of my right arm. At the beginning, the pain was horrendous, but now it's gone down to hurting only when I actually try to use the arm for more than a little typing and lifting less than a pound. Anything more than that and the pain starts to ramp up again. (And of course, I'm right-handed, so I'm basically bollixed as far as being able to work more than an hour or so at a time.)

Well, I won't be taking them again unless something causes very serious pain. It was just too yucky by half. I've got some big Motrins - 800 mgs each - so I'm gonna rely on those.

How absolutely miserable. I can can empathize very well--I had a distal clavicle resection in September, ostensibly to relieve an impingement. After many miserable weeks I got--bonus!--a frozen shoulder. I'm getting really, really tired of it, but at least I'm not in constant pain any more.

I'm sure you've gotten every bit of good advice that well-meaning people can offer. Ice is about the only thing that works consistently for me, along with masses of Naproxen.

Are you doing PT? It sounds as if you're making a little progress at least (I know, it's never enough).

I take it when I absolutely, positively can't take the pain, because I hate how it makes me feel

Further evidence that I have no receptors in my brain. I've had these before and felt absolutely nothing except a little sleepy.

That sounds absolutely dreadful. I hope you get better soon, bb! *hugs*

OUCH - I sure hope the shoulder is feeling better now. One of the main reasons to take something for pain (besides the decrease in pain) is to relax the muscles so they can heal. But it is hard to take pain meds when there are so many side effects.

I've taken Vicodin when I had knee surgery and when I had a dental problem - it did help the pain but instead of making me sleeping it had the opposite effect and I COULDN'T sleep - I was glad when I could stop taking them!!
