The Turning - Drabble, G

I have a new drabble! Well, not new exactly, but newly posted. It came to me watching ROTK a while back, and it's called...




Life had always been so kind, and it staggered him now to realize how blind he had been to that kindness. All the days of his life - warm, lazy summers, snowball fights at Yule, kisses stolen under spring boughs near brooks brightly chattering, moonlight silent on the fields, the blossoming hills - all these shuffled through his mind like a conjurer's cards, though they could not eclipse the terror he faced. The hilt in his hands felt wrong, so wrong, but perhaps it was beginning to feel right. He looked up.

"I didn't think it would end this way."

Fate ... I always ponder where and when Frodo's fate was sealed; being born on Bilbo's birthday, being orphaned, being made Bilbo's heir, being stabbed at Weathertop where he did wield a sword despite movie canon?

I think it was sealed before he was born, but then I think he was born into Middle Earth specifically for the role he played in its salvation.

By the by, the drabble isn't about Frodo, in case that's what you were thinking.

Aha, my mind always wanders to Frodo but I didn't think the set up sounded like him because his life wasn't all that idyllic ... so a hobbit, the others in the Fellowship were used to weaponry, but which one?

Correct me if I'm wrong...

this drabble at first seems to be about Frodo, but doesn't seem quite right. It almost seems like it was written during Sam's encounter with Shelob.

BTW, loved the drabble. Looking forward to reading more!

Now that you mention it...I didn't really look at the picture at first. It appears to be Pippin. (from a scene at Minas Tirith?)

If I'm not right, blame it on a 10 hour work shift *grin* But that pic doesn't look like Merry, and Sam and Frodo have already been ruled out.

Yes, you got it. It's Pippin. I thought it would be clear from his line in the drabble. But it's interesting to hear other ideas about it.
