Ficlet - Asunder

Wow, them bunnies bite hard! *rubs ankle*

Written from [livejournal.com profile] shirebound's plot bunny abour Faramir dreaming of Frodo's departure.

This is really short, and it would take longer to list all the pairings and categories it implies than it takes to read it, so you'll just have to trust me. I shall shock you with one thing, however - it's angsty. (Didn't see that coming, didja?)

Asunder
by Serai

In the very depths of the night, Faramir awakes sobbing. For a moment, he doesn’t know where he is. Then strong arms tighten about him, and the King's voice, slow and overheated, whispers, "What is it? What has happened?"

Pain prevents an answer for long moments. The sound of waves, the glimmering sunset clouds, the light flaring like a fallen star on the horizon before disappearing. Finally he chokes out, “He is gone."

Aragorn looks up at his wife leaning over the stricken Dreamer, and her luminous eyes declare the truth of it. He feels the loss shuddering in the air around him, and so he begins to sing, low and long, as he gentles Faramir's grief into a deep sleep.

Heehee! Well, you know how much I'm all about the backstory. More layers, more layers! Maybe it's those ten-layer Italian rum cakes that my parents always bought for our birthdays when I was growing up - seems I can't create a tale that doesn't have as many implications as possible.

Yeah, I'm wrestling again. We'll see what else leaps out.

You're writing! Yay!

And I love this. It's like a prequel to the drabble I wrote, but better.

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-12 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, honey! I'm so happy you like it. Your drabble is lovely, with that measured, stately dignity that makes it very Tolkien. Of course when I pondered the concept, I got hit with something tearful and sweaty and undefined, because my Muse likes to fuck with me that way.

But yes, you're right - I hadn't thought of it, but this could easily have happened the night before yours. Yay! I've always wished I could write something with you, and now subconsciously, I guess I have! *bounces happily*

So much emotion - He feels the loss shuddering in the air around him, and so he begins to sing, low and long, as he gentles Faramir's grief into a deep sleep.
So beautiful and sad. Thank you!

Thanks, I'm very glad you like it! The subject has been written by others, but always with a joyful bent. When I got hit with the image of Faramir crying, I realized that there might be others in Middle Earth besides the Travelers who would weep to know they would never see Frodo again. :)

Gorgeous! Loved the capital on Dreamer, skewed my reading effectively! Wonderful word choice! Thanks!

*grin*

Glad you liked it. Just as Aragorn inherits the Healing Hands, it always seemed to me that Faramir's prophetic dreaming might be a talent that he inherits through his bloodline, one that maybe he hasn't talked about much. So I imagine he would be recognized for it, if only by those closest to him.

Marvelous, and with so many possible layers to it too!

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-12 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! My Muse does like to leave things up to the reader. I never know whether to attribute that to complexity, inscrutability, or just plain laziness, LOL!

Wow, Serai -- this is gorgeous.

Thanks, dear! *mwah*

Ah geez. Sad, sad, sad. How we mull this, over and over until our eyes bled. But it is such good release... :) Good work. :)

Thank you! Yes, we keep going over it, but it's such lovely territory.

Angsty but beautiful. *clutches chest*

Thank you! *sob*

OMG, what sadness! I do adore the F/F love...

I'm glad you like it. I'm not usually into interspecies, but every now and then my Muse throws me a curve ball. :)

Oh my, how beautiful. Especially, "and so he begins to sing, low and long, as he gentles Faramir's grief into a deep sleep."

There is such gentle love in this short piece. *sigh*

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-13 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! It's a great plot bunny. :)

This is just lovely. I love drabbles and this is why. Each word is like a drop of paint that blends with all the others to make a masterpiece. So well done.

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-13 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Although this is not a drabble, I do love writing those, too.

[identity profile] mews1945.livejournal.com 2005-08-13 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh oh, I just assumed because it's short that it was a drabble. Sorry. It's lovely, that's what I was trying to say.

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's ok. I tried to make it a drabble, but it just wouldn't go. :)

Wow.
[livejournal.com profile] serai1's back; let the angsting begin!

Glad to see you writing again!

Thank you! I'm very glad you like it. Yes, it's nice to be writing again.

Oh, I just saw this (and even after you emailed me)...:-) This is lovely and angsty and...almost interspecies !;-) I'm afraid my icon is way too crude for the occasion...

[identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com 2005-08-20 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'm really glad you like it, Claudia. I hardly ever do this, so it's interesting when it rears its head. *ahem* So to speak.
