Surprise fan theory
.
Okay, been mulling some over the latest episode of Penny Dreadful, and here are some thoughts.
I no longer believe that Ethan is a traditional werewolf. Something else is going on with him. I don't believe he got turned by being bitten, and I don't believe that his bite can turn others. Specifically, because it didn't. That guy whose face he nearly ripped off did not become one, for instance. So I must assume that anyone else he's turned to hamburger without chowing down hasn't, either.
Doesn't mean, however, that I think he's a one-off. This will be proven or disproven pretty soon, but I've decided that it was Katenay who turned him. Not with a bite, but with magic. I think Ethan's lycanthropy is Katenay's revenge for the massacre of his people that Ethan participated in. And I think that's why Ethan hates him so much - not just that he wouldn't kill him when asked, but on top of that, he saddled Ethan with this incredibly pointed and apropos curse. You ate my people, white man, so now you'll never stop eating yours. Now that's a wizard to be reckoned with.
I'm really loving the Hell Bitch that Lily's turned into. She's become the shrieking id of feminism, the monster deep inside that just wants to slit the throat of every man that ever put his foot on a woman's neck. She's so fucking cathartic, I can't even. And how about her protege? Considering the show's literary roots, did anyone else's blood run cold when her name was revealed as Justine? Holy SHIT. Are we seriously going to go there? (Well, why the fuck not? It's not as if Logan has shown any sign of demureness so far!)
I loved that sweet little moment when John watched from across the street as Vanessa met up with her new beau. The way he smiled and seemed to wish her well, it was awfully nice. I'm wondering, though, when or if he's going to meet up with Lily again. Last season, she had THAT FUCKING SCENE with him - that scene, that scene, holy shit, that scene was so FUCKING EPIC, I wanted to bow down at her feet - that ended up with her promising to enlist him in her Holy War Against Rapist Jerks And Maybe Everybody Because FUN. So what happened with that? Did she just forget about him? Did she ever ask herself, "I wonder what happened to my ugly brother? Wasn't he supposed to come over for the wienie roast?" I do hope they'll get together again, and John will join her merry band of murderers. Though perhaps he's not pissed off enough for that anymore.
And of course, the doctors. Okay, so is anyone else thinking that Dr. Jekyll is, in fact, constantly shooting himself up so he won't turn into OMG RAGING HATE MAN? The way he very nearly freaked out on Victor makes me think that might be the case, which would be delicious reversal on the original story. Perhaps the near freakout was actually withdrawal symptoms from the drug, and the monster starting to claw his way out. And holy shit, seriously, Victor? THAT is what you want to do to Lily? Know what? You're kind of a dick.
Oh, Ethan. *sigh* Killing Sembene really seems to have broken him. He's become rock-hard and ominous and nasty. Clearly he has no problem at all being a colossal asshole when the situation calls for it. The coming showdown with Daddykins is going to be epic, I think, because this boy Does Not Give A Shit.
I'm also wondering when Missy Thing is going to become something more than just a fly to annoy him. She has potential as a character, but up to now she's been reacting off other people. I want to know about her, what her deal is. Yes, she wants to play Murder The World with Ethan and give him blowjobs while he sits angsting on his blood-covered throne, but what else? Who is she, really? In herself? I hope they develop her beyond Super Witch Who Helps Ethan Massacre His Family.
And what is up with Katenay and Malcolm? He's stringing the guy along like crazy, letting him believe he's doing this out of protectiveness or love, when what he really wants is something way more sinister. And Malcolm hasn't a fucking clue this is going on. He's too stuck in his resentful I HATE EVERYTHING GODDAM funk to see he's being used. What a tool that guy is.
Lastly, Vanessa. Oh, dear. Vanessa, Vanessa, Vanessa. What the fuck, woman? How is it you can smell witches and demons a mile away but you can't sense the presence of fucking DRACULA? The biggest of all, the king of his kind? I mean seriously, what the everliving fuck? Did her Spidey sense just dry up and blow away? Did she drink herself into some low-level brain damage during her wallow in cigarettes and mindless staring? How is it possible that she doesn't know who this guy is? Or at least that he's someone she should never allow within ten city blocks of her? I don't get it. I hope they're going to clear that up, because it's kind of major for her.
Man, this show just keeps being interesting. There've been a few blips along the way, and I think they've dropped the ball on some really interesting story threads, though I hope Logan is just playing a long game with some of them, and we'll see the threads intertwine again later on. I'm still jonesing for an epic showdown between Ethan, Lily, and Dorian. That triangle would blow up half of London with its Intense Blood Rage Horny Sex Massacre vibes, I should think. Imagine if some intervening tragedy caused Ethan to go Full Evil and join their army of super suffragette warriors. (Damn, I really do love that concept. There are so many places Logan could go with it.)
But Josh still has to grow his hair back. *sigh*

Oh, a D/L/E threeway... OM NOM NOMNOMNOMNOM. * makes gimme hands *
You know, I'm still not completely certain that Ethan even remembers fucking Dorian. He was wasted out of his mind when it happened, and remember when the demon outed him? He didn't act like a guy who'd had a secret revealed, or even like a guy whose sex life was being talked about in a rather unsettling way. He acted like he thought she was crazy. I saw no indication that he accepted what she said as the truth, so I wonder if it was the truth for him.
