Idea for a scene from The West Wing:

Josh and Sam walk into the Oval Office. Bartlet looks up from his papers and asks, "Why the long faces?" Josh and Sam glance at each other.

"You want to tell him?" Josh asks.

"I think you should tell him," Sam replies.

Josh clears his throat. "Sir, it looks like Denmark says Greenland isn't for sale."

Bartlet, visibly startled, says, "Well, I should hope not." Josh and Sam look at each other, then look away. "Are you telling me we were thinking of buying Greenland?" Bartlet asks incredulously.

Sam murmurs, "I told you it wasn't a good idea." Josh talks over him, "Sir, we thought it might be worth looking into, what with all their... mineral resources... and..." He stops, frozen by Bartlet's stare.

Leo comes in and asks what's going on.

Bartlet replies, "It looks like Greenland isn't for sale."

Leo glares at the two abashed staffers and says vehemently, "Well, I should hope not!"

Thus ensues a three-minute lecture from Bartlet (aided by a pissed-off Leo) about North European economics as they relate to dumbass ideas like that, interrupted only when Abbie comes in and tells Jed to leave the boys alone and let them get back to recess.

So it looks like John Legend is going to take on the role of Jesus in the live musical of Jesus Christ Superstar. Interesting casting! They've also got Alice Cooper to play Herod, which just tickles me enormously. It looks like it'll be a good production, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I wonder who they'll get for Judas?

So what does everyone think about the news that Amazon and Warner Bros. are in talks to produce a TV series of LOTR?

Myself, I'm fine with it. The more, the merrier. Every adaptation will add to the tapestry of the story, and honestly, I want to see what other actors and filmmakers will do with the story and the characters (not the mention Middle Earth itself). I'm happy there'll be another version I can enjoy!

The latest on the PD fiasco, and I'm hating Logan even more now. Turns out the reason they quit is the ONE reason nobody would have been pissed off about, and it is this:

Eva couldn't take it anymore.

Back in the middle of season TWO, she told them she wouldn't go past season three. WHY DIDN'T THEY SAY ANYTHING??? "No, she must be FORCED to go on!" is a thing no PD fan would say EVER.

If they'd only told everyone at the start of season three, "This is our last season. Our leading lady isn't up to being bashed around and required to rip herself open every episode anymore. We've worked hard on this last season, so everybody give her a big hand!" THAT would have been the way to handle it, and all the fans would have said "Well, DUH. Not surprising she wants out!" And we all would have been weepy and then gotten into the third season.

But this bullshit of LYING over and over - it turns out she refused to continue to the SEVENTH proposed season, not five, not six, certainly NOT three - only pissed everyone off and ruined the ending for most of us. Had we known what was coming, had we known WHY, I think most everyone would have accepted, with grace good or ill.

*sigh* Why do Hollywood people have to be so goddamn STUPID?

ETA: The most damning bit is that the series ended not just because Eva couldn't go on, but subsequently because Logan couldn't think of a way to continue without her. Really, dude? Okay, bullshit again, because either you just admitted you're a really lousy writer (with all those other characters, there was NO WAY to continue?) or you just flat out quit because you didn't feel like doing it without that character. Either way, you clearly don't realize you just told us you're a dick.

But we knew that already..

Aha!

So I WAS right, after all. Now on to the last episode...

I so hope the show gets renewed. Looks like it has a good chance, despite not being a ratings powerhouse. It's a prestige project, so it's got legs. We shall see...

Eagerly awaiting tonight's Penny Dreadful. Looks like we'll get an Ethan-centric tale this time. *licks chops*

(WHEN is he gonna peel down again? I miss seeing that fine, fine hotness going about its business. *makes grabby hands*)

Also, DID YOU KNOW THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE NEW ROOTS IS ON TONIGHT??

I didn't even know they'd done a new version until a few days ago. Seriously, take a look at this:

Does that not look awesome? The guy they got to play Kinte is thirty-eight kinds of dreamy, and the production values are excellent. Am loving the fact that it looks like they're emphasizing Kinte's Muslimness, which was played down in the original series. THAT should get the wingnuts in a froth! And how perfect is casting Rhys Meyers as a slave owner? I GIVE IT A TEN THAT'S HOW PERFECT. That guy always comes off as a nasty little weasel to me. This just looks fucking great.

Did I mention that Kinte is fucking gorgeous? BECAUSE HE IS.

Okay, been mulling some over the latest episode of Penny Dreadful, and here are some thoughts.

In the premiere episode of PD last week, did anyone else notice the change in Ethan's tone once his daddy's boys plucked him from the train? Up til then, as he was traveling, he looked kind of drawn in and apprehensive - clearly he was anticipating his next fit, which should be due pretty soon, seeing as some time's past since the last one. But once he woke up from being tolchocked on the head, he shifted to being rather amused. I could almost hear him thinking, "Oh, I'm gonna kill you? That's alright, then." He starts out tensed up about killing innocent people, and then seems almost relieved when he realizes he's gonna carve up a bunch of assholes!

I love that Josh decided to play it that way. I love this show. The sense of humor is fierce.

LOL.

I just downloaded an episode of the new season of Hawaii Five-O, just to see how it holds up now. HA. Amazing how much interest I did not have in it. Seriously, it took me maybe six minutes to decide, "Nope. Bored. Good-bye."

Wow, I don't think my fandom interest has ever plummeted that violently. That whole ridiculous kerfuffle just flat out BURNED that guy out of my brain. Pity. He did have his moments. Maybe I'll be able to watch Moonlight again if I give it a couple of years. Long enough to wash the taste of that fish-flavored coffee out of my mouth, at any rate. ;)

Still glad I wrote those ficlets, though. It's too bad I never got to the third in the trilogy, Leechman. It was going to be about a heart surgeon. Oh well, perhaps it'll come through someday

Trevor Noah really was funny last night. He's got a sharp sense of humor, puckish, I'd say. He definitely hasn't turned me off, so I'm going to continue giving him a chance.

And he's cheerful. I'm sure it's because he's new to the game, but he seems really up for the nonsense. Jon was really squeezed out at the end - who can blame him? - so Trevor is a big contrast. I'm interested and curious to see where he will go with this.

Also, VERY happy with the new Colbert show. Oh, he is having such a good time. It's lovely to see. And gratifying that he's not lost his punch. His guests are varied and interesting, he's a GREAT interviewer, able to draw out anyone. (Except Trump. He still managed to sound like a jackass.) (Not that that wasn't fun.) And he's brought along some of his TDS/TCR schtick, last night instituting a new segment reminiscent of the dearly departed "This Week In God" from TDS, a segment I always looked forward to, as I'm delighted by really well-educated comic commentary on the doings of religion. Stephen is excellent at that.

Plus, watching him dance at the beginning of every show is utterly wonderful. He can make me smile no matter how bad a day I've been having. *sigh*

So Wes Craven died today. Most people know him for his work in horror films, but I was never into those. I'll always remember him for his work with the 80's version of The Twilight Zone. Just like the original, it was a hit-and-miss affair, but when it was good, it kicked serious ass. Craven directed several episodes, some of the best in the series, including this one.

Shatterday

Herein you can see the very first segment of that series, a dramatization of Harlan Ellison's short story Shatterday starring an almost unknown Bruce Willis. This was a lot of people's first glimpse of the man, including me. It's miles away from his usual wiseacre persona, certainly from David Addison, the smartass detective he'd play for several seasons on Moonlighting, and the blueprint for so many of his performances after. Here he's uptight, paranoid, and spiralling slowly into madness. An interesting performance handled in an interesting way by Craven. I especially like the focus on keeping the main character in a tight visual box, emphasizing the concept of being shut in and cut off.

RIP, for a talented artist.

The End of an Era

So just as I predicted, I'm an emotional wreck right now.

What a wonderful show. Dedicated completely to thanking all the people who worked there over the years to make it one of the best goddamn shows ever produced anywhere.

And the ending... Well, of course, they got Springsteen to close out the thing, and I was already teary, but when he broke out with Born to Run, I just fucking LOST IT. Started crying big time while mouthing the lyrics I've known by heart since I was a shy little teen. It was perfect - Jon introduced Bruce with, "Here it is, my Moment of Zen."

So that's it. First Stephen, now Jon. The end of an era. I know there was a time before TDS existed, but I can't think the future will be anywhere near as bright without Jon's great, wise snark to get us through the nasty sump of this country's insanity, to say nothing of the rest of the world's. I look forward to the next chapter in his conversation with us, but I can't help being sad.

Thanks so much, Mr. Stewart, and bye for now.

So I just started watching Penny Dreadful and holy fucking Goddess, WHEN did Josh Hartnett get so unbe-fucking-lievably SEXY? Seriously, the man has me drooling. When did this even happen??

I have to confess that I haven't really thought about him in a long time, as he fell off my radar with that painful Wicker Park atrocity. I knew he was out there making movies, but after that debacle, I'd kinda written him off. Which worked out just fine, because now I get to be LAID OUT FLAT by what he's turned into. He's not pretty anymore - now he's interesting, a quality worth far more in an actor. As Valentine Michael might say, he's growing into his own face. It's a wonderful thing to see.

Plus, you know, there's all that fucking SKIN.

Blessed Aphrodite - I never thought I'd get to see this guy's body. Did you notice how for a long while he almost never even took his shirt off for the camera? Now this series keeps throwing these lush sex scenes into the mix, and I'm lying in a pool of sliced tomatoes. (Because you better believe I'm watching this thing in bed.) Wow, his body is beautiful. And he's photographed beautifully, as well. He's definitely the sex object in this series. Considering how much this show has to do with hunger and vampires and devouring, it's almost impossible not to see those scenes as a decadent feast laid out for us. Here you go, ladies - hot, sweet, and juicy. Eat your fill. Oh, I get trembly just thinking about it.

And I'll tell you, I never thought I'd see Josh Hartnett taking another man. OH HOLY BITCH GODDESS. I was hyperventilating, I swear. So fucking hot, but of course the scene didn't go anywhere near far enough - they chickened out and left the guys shirtless and playing tonsil hockey. HEADDESK HEADDESK HEADDESK. But I have hopes we'll see more; I'm only on the sixth episode and I really don't see any indication that sex will be put on the back burner.

Oh my. Just...oh my. What an amazing, lovely, kindling surprise this is turning out to be. The fact that it's just a damn good series all around is icing on the cake, frankly, since I'm so dazzled by what's happened to him. So just assume that I'm rattling off a list of every word for "fucking HOT" you've ever heard. Because I am, at full volume.

Our Zekey Boy's all grown up.

P.S. Here is my theory about the brontosaurus: Ethan Chandler is a werewolf. SHUT UP RIGHT NOW. I don't want to hear if I'm right or not. I just wanted to say it, because I am So. Looking. Forward. to his transformation. So if I'm wrong, let me be disappointed on my own.

But I don't think I'm wrong.

ETA: HA. I knew it!
