Jared Talbot is a man who's always had his own way, until Ethan stood up to him and then brought about the destruction of his family. And he's still trying to force Ethan to do what he wants him to do, by threatening to kill him if he doesn't. He doesn't understand that Ethan doesn't really care if he lives or dies, so he has no power over him anymore. He's an arrogant SOB, but he's tragic, too.

The hat I never really thought about. It seems to fit Ethan's character. Now I might have to push Father Sarducci out of my mind when I see it.
