I suspect that the person who wrote the review for the NYT had not seen the film at all. Like, they wrote that the grandfather that goes along on the Search is Jonathan's grandfather. They clearly didn't know what they were talking about. Maybe they heard there was sex in the book and assumed it would be in the film as well.
As for the film: I guess it would have been too complicated to include the historical part of the book - not to mention that it would have made the film very long. But I'm so glad to know it's there, in a way. I can't wait to see what these 'few key images and little threads, like wisps of fog appearing in the grass' will be like! I'm sure they will be magical, and beautiful.
And oxer12 is right: you really have a telent for writing film reviews. Or, you know, for writing in general. :)
