I don't know. I really don't. I had the impression the people running this place were cool, but Christ on a cracker.
The reason I was given by my supervisor is that the workload has slowed considerably, so they don't need as many admins. But fucking hell, it's not like they didn't KNOW that was going to happen. They could have given me a heads-up like, last week or so. At least it would have given me some time to think about money and all that.
The agency lady says she'll jump on finding me something right away, and that's nice of her, but even a couple of days without pay is really bad for me at this time of year. All the fucking holidays (which I don't believe in and DON'T FUCKING NEED TO HAVE OFF) take enough out of my paycheck as it is. I don't need this shit on top of it.
Jesus, that is cruel. Some kind of warning is common courtesy, especially around this time of year. Even if you don't celebrate, holidays mean loss of pay for some people, and companies should take that into consideration.
Thanks, hon. I'm going to talk to the agency lady and let her know that I think what they did sucks, and that if they're going to give the company feedback, I'll appreciate it if they'll include that. You're right. This was not a surprise, they knew their workload would go down, and there's no reason at all why they couldn't have had the consideration to tell me. It's just inexcusable.
But hey, that's life. Who the hell cares about whether an employee can pay the rent or not?
I cannot think of anything remotely positive to say. I live in fear of this very thing and then it happens to you, at Christmas and my mind is a blank.
Aw, man, that so truly bites. I've been canned the day before Thanksgiving too, but right before Christmas? That is absolutely a new low, since it is hardly a prime hiring season.
And, you know, they expect two weeks notice out of a lowly employee, you'd think they could manage at least that themselves. But it's all about the year-end head count, yanno.
And you are soooo right about those smiling faces.
I am so sorry. It happened to me and I know what it's like to come home and sit in a chair in the living room and think, "what am I going to do."
Sigh. I hope your agent can find something fast. I so wish you the best, Serai. As far as work goes nowdays, no matter what the job, "we are all in business for ourselves." To hell with them all. Take care of yourself. Bastards.
I can only add my condolences and my disgust at your former employers. Gone are the days when hard work, loyalty, and simple honoring of the Golden Rule were expected. We are not the better for it, as a nation and as a people.
My company did that to one of my employees two years ago - well, the week before Christmas anyway. I thought it sucked then, and I think it sucks now. Jesus, unless they catch someone in the act of stealing from them, there is NO excuse for that.
Awh Fuck Serai. Totally fucking sucks. Temping sucks. It's a great way to get your foot in the door, but man, it's things like these that make me feel temping is the new slavery.
Yeah, it would have been nice of them to say something, but you know they don't have to, just as you don't have to tell them why you're leaving (if you decide not to come back one day). But almost every temp job I've worked, they've had the common courtesy to forwarn me.
Hopefully you'll find something soon, but the holidays are tough to find a job.
Sending hugs your way, 'cos when it was me last year, hugs seemed to be the best medicine.
Grrr, what Scrooges! :-( They obviously don't know what Christmas spirit is. How mean! Perhaps they didn't let you know beforehand so that you wouldn't immediately decide to look for something else & take your valuable experience with you? I don't know what things are like where you are but, if you don't really care about having a break over Christmas, there are always places which need to stay open all the year round and some of them are probably willing to pay employees double or even triple-time for working over the holidays. Good luck, anyway.
I've been a temp for 5 years, and this happened to me 2 years ago. Right before Christmas, the bastards. I went home that Friday night, and the agency called me and said don't bother going back.
It seems that a lot of companies fire their temps around holidays, for whatever sick reason. It totally sucks.
I'm so sorry. :-( I hope your agency is able to give you a new placement quickly.
I can't even imagine doing that to someone at any time of year, but especially at Christmas, when as you say, you're already losing money due to holidays.
The complete and utter lack of empathy on the part of some people never fails to disappoint and enrage me.
I don't know how I missed this when you first posted it, but I'm so sorry, and I'm thinking of you. Best of luck in 2006, especially. I hope that you find something really good that really lasts.
