I doubt he would be at all surprised. I'm sure the seeds of this were sown long, long ago.

Maybe not surprised, but definitely sad. It was a cautionary tale, after all. However, I think he might be surprised that those who so hysterically opposed communism have taken up almost all its devices in controlling the population.
