Some of you may have noticed that Sudafed and other such nasal decongestants are being taken off the shelves at supermarkets, and will only be available behind pharmacy counters, and in some states will require prescriptions. While the whole meth problem makes these moves understandable, it can be rather a pain to deal with. There's a new class of decongestants on the market but professionals are saying they don't work.

Which is why I will now recommend to you the very best decongestant I have ever used. It works incredibly well and is natural to boot. So no refined chemicals!

It's called Goldenseal. It is the dried root of the Goldenseal plant, and you can get it either in capsules or in bulk from health food stores. You can also buy it online. Besides being an awesome decongestant, it has many other wonderful properties.

The only caveat in my experience is that you have to be careful not to take too much. But seeing as how the decongestant effects last about 8 hours per dose, you wouldn't be taking enough to cause any problems.

Really, this is great stuff. It'll dry all that gunk in your sinsues right up; I was amazed the first time I tried it. I always try to take naturopathic remedies whenever I can, provided they work, of course. (Not all natural rememdies work as well as they're purported to, I've found.) And this is one I can heartily recommend. :)

Do you know if you can take it with high blood pressure? I can't take regular decongestants because of it and whenever I get a head cold, I end up burning myself on pots of steam. :(

Apparently, it shouldn't be taken if you have the high blood. Sorry about that. From what I can see after poking around, pretty much any decongestant can cause problems for someone with this condition. :(

I'm sitting here with my pile of sodden kleenexes, wondering if Goldenseal will keep a person awake the way Sudafed does? I would love to find a decongenstant that I can take later in the day. If I take one of the commercial ones anytime after noon, I won't be able to sleep that night (and sleep is very, very important to me.)

I haven't found that it keeps me awake at all. So I would say you should try it. (Unless you have high blood pressure.) :)

Forgot to say: the reason Sudafed and things like that keep you awake is that they contain extracts of ephedra, which is basically herbal speed. (Which is what makes these products useful to meth labs.) But goldenseal has nothing to do with ephedra, which is a very different plant, from a different part of the world. So no worries. :)

That's really funny. Because a few years ago, I would have been all, "Bring on the ephedra!" Now, I would rather sleep at night.

I actually got about 4 hours last night, which is more than I got Friday night and Saturday night put together. It was just too damned hot to sleep. I am going to be a basket case by the end of this week unless the heat breaks.

Oh ARGH. I am so glad the heat wave finally broke here in So Cal. The last three days have been very pleasant, which is great because we've been roasting for about a month before that.

Climate change? What?? That's all some horseshit liberal fantasy! The weather's fine, I tell you!! It's just a little summer heat!! IT'S FINE! THE WORLD IS NOT TURNING INTO A DESERT!!! NO IT'S NOT!!! MOMMYYYYYYY!!!!!

Yes, I remember 1988 being a very hot summer here in Michigan, but it wasn't hot all over the freaking country for the whole season! Probably we have a couple more days of hot here, before we get storms and cooler weather later on Wednesday or Thursday. Cooler being a relative term - I'll take 88 as a high. This weather is absolutle killing my sinuses. Not to mention what it's doing to the crops, wildlife and the glaciers.
