I am so heartily sick of people going on about how LOTR was "ruined" by the screenwriters, how "wrong-headed" the scripts were, how the characters were "weakened" or "betrayed" or what-the-fuck-ever whiny crap purists keep coming up with. For fuck's sake, can we just LET IT GO already??

Are people still QQing over it? (for being an adapation, overall, it was pretty good. Minus stupidity like Legolas surfing around)

I mean, it could always be worse.

Could've been Ewe Boll.

Heh, I rather enjoyed the Legolas bits, mainly because he was always a cardboard character; even Tolkien complained about that. At least in the movies he got to have a bit of panache.

Could have been worse. Indeed, it could. Whenever I see someone bitching about this, I want to sit them down and make them watch Stuart Little. Now that's a shitty adaptation.

Where is this still going on at, at One Ring? When I think of what could have happened and how it turned out, I was more than just pleased. I can think of so many great books that were trashed by film, but LotR? It's a strong adaption.

No, it's here at LJ. What really ticks me off is when somebody who claims to like the films can't stop themselves from getting sniping about the "wrong" bits. That kind of passive-aggressive, backhanded crap annoys me far worse than those who just run off at the mouth about how HORRIBLE the whole thing was. Those guys are easy to ignore; it's the ones who sneak attack that I want to throttle!

Yep. Some people just can't enjoy the sweet and let what they don't like go. They always have to bring up the stuff they disagree with. Shit, there are things that I don't like about the films, but I made my peace with those bits long ago, and don't bring them up when I talk about LOTR. But some people just HAVE to get the digs in every. damn. time. It's so frigging tedious.

True. I wonder what PJ does when people like that get on his case.

I just wish some could just lighten up and enjoy things for just pure enjoyment!

Those people should be strapped to a chair with their eyeballs clamped open ala Clockwork Orange and be forced to watch the Bakshi cartoon over and over and over.

Yeah, but you know, I've actually seen people claim the Bakshi Horror was better.

How about using the back button and/or quickly scrolling over 'offending' posts? People are different and some move on and some don't and neither is right and neither is wrong.

And this is my journal and I feel like venting. You could use the back button too, for the same reason.

There are always those who will complain and bitch - it's a fact of life sadly. Just lately I've read a few comments about how Elijah ruined Frodo and what a travesty it was. He was perfect IMO and to most other people too.

See, I find that the weirdest thing to say. How does an actor's performance "ruin" a book character? The guy in the book is still exactly the same as he always was. What they're complaining about is their own inability to differentiate the two. How is that the actor's fault??

Interpretation is an issue I suppose but I also feel that Elijah himself could be more of the problem for these people. There are some who just don't care for him or his style of acting and that is what 'ruined' it for them. He was a new face for me and perfectly wonderful.

I must agree! We were lucky to get the films at all. It's not a simple task to bring a book to life on the screen let alone a classic series of books. All prior attempts were laughable. And it is certainly time to get over it, either way.
