I hear you! I don't have answers...such hatred and evil exhibited today...I'm not sure how to fight against it. The world is so small now; qualifiers like "over there" or "over here" are meaningless. We are all vulnerable, we are all affected. I called my dad first thing this morning, from work, to find out if he'd seen the news or been in touch with anyone yet. He had no idea what had happened...he'd only just woken up. So I had him call my grandmother as soon as possible. My family is mostly in Granada, but my uncle is frequently in Madrid on business trips, and I have several friends who study there. I was frightened for them. Chance could have put any of them in harm's way today, including your sister. Just as easily, chance may put one of us in harm's way here in the States. I may not have lost a friend or relative today, but that doesn't stop the grief at such suffering. I was horrified to hear on the news a few more bombs had been discovered and diffused which had been set to go off just as rescue workers were arriving. How sick!
We don't know who is behind this yet, but at the heart of it, that doesn't matter...whatever the politico-religious excuses used to justify today's atrocity, the true root is hatred, nihilism, and despair. It's those forces we have to fight every day, on the small scale of our interpersonal relationships...maybe, just maybe, the small actions we carry out in our day to day lives will ripple out as a magnified force against the destructive drives in our human nature.
