Please take note:

Taunt means "to tease in a degrading manner, to bait a person into conflict". The French Soldiers taunted King Arthur mercilessly.

Taut means "pulled tight, under tension". Sam's knots pulled Frodo's arms taut against the headboard.


The wrong one rather changes the meaning of the sentence. So get it right.

I think this is the one peeve that ticks me off most of all. And some otherwise very good authors do this which just makes me nuts. Definitely with you on this one.

Oh, I don't know, being taunted against a headboard sounds kind of kinky to me, for people who get off on verbal abuse. ("Taunt me now! Harder! Please!")
