[livejournal.com profile] teasel posted another of her very interesting essays on images in the LOTR films, this one about the use of sculpture and statuary in the backgrounds of scenes. Great stuff. I commented about my very favorite picture juxtaposing a character and sculpture, and what I thought it symbolized.

This got me thinking about the whole concept, and I remembered Shakespeare's Sonnet LV. Back when I was taking class in the Bard with Dan Chace (an excellent Shakespeare teacher) at Stella Adler, I chose this sonnet to prepare and recite. At the time, I put a twist on it that he really liked, in that I spoke it as a prayer to the Goddess. That fascinated him because he knew nothing about the Lady, and he's the kind of actor who prefers his hamburgers made from sacred cow. The experience was one of several that convinced me Shakespeare is best when you take him in a completely different direction.

So anyway. I realized that lovely Sonnet fits the pic I mentioned beautifully, so I made wallpaper combining them. Here it is for your viewing pleasure and (I hope) usage.

Sonnet for Frodo

It's an 800x600, because that's as far as I could blow the pic up and still have a pleasant image. If anybody has a high-res version of this pic (the whole pic - I've seen the high-res vertical slice, but that won't work for this), I'd sure love it if you could get it to me. Then I could make a much better version of this.

But I still like the way it came out. :)

Enjoy!

Oh, this is just wonderful. Shakespeare and Frodo. What a combination. Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? It would pale against your beauty and heroism, my dear hobbit.

Thanks Serai! What a lovely interlude.

Thanks, C! I'm glad you enjoy it. Yes, Shakespeare is so eloquent - has words for practically anything.

The sonnet IS lovely and very apt to describe Frodo and his journey. You made me want to re-read all the sonnets again. :) Thank you for this. It's lovely.
