Which has more area, a 9" circle or an 8" square?

Area = π*radius^2 for a circle, length of side squared for a square. So 63.6" for the circle and 64" for the square; or, darn close. If my math is right. And I assume you ask because of cake pans. :D

Thank you! I suck at math.

And yes, lol. Was looking at a brownie recipe that asked for an 8" pan, and I only have a 9" circle. So, good to know the areas are almost the same and I can use my circle pan and not get brownies that are way too thin. :)

(I need a cooking icon!)

No problem. :D I did have to look it up online--I don't really use good ol' pi-r-squared in normal life. But it sounds right, so maybe high school geometry did stick a little in my head.

Yeah, I hadn't run the numbers before, so I'm surprised they're that similar. Nonetheless, the brownies should be fine. The interesting difference could be in the amount of edge you get, which can be good to know, since people get passionate about edge brownies vs. middle brownies. (I like the gooey middle ones myself.)

The 8" square will give you 32" of edges, while for the circle...checking that formula... pi x 9" = 28.27", so less edge and more middle (yay!) for round pans. Hmm, I should start using round pans for my brownies!
