It suddenly occurred to me to wonder what Smaug would be like if he were played by James Spader.

I have no idea who James Spader is sorry! So I'm really going off topic here, but I recently read a lot of critisism about Benedict playing Smaug, especially that his voice is not 'deep' enough to be dragon like. Which struck me honestly, because he has one of the lowest/deepest voices I know :O

I personally think he's a great choice for Smaug, he really surrenders himself to the roles he plays, he will do fine :)

This is James Spader. He's been around since the 80's, and he's now on the American version of The Office. His biggest role to date was on Boston Legal.

The reason I thought of him for Smaug is that he's cultivated a screen persona that's rather cold and calculating, and he has this heavy-lidded, reptilian gaze that can be quite chilling. Plus, his voice is wonderfully lazy and disdainful, as if he just barely deigns to bestow his attention on whatever lower form of life he's talking to. I've never heard him try to do an accent other than his own, but what he could do with what he's got would be awesome, in my opinion, anyway.

Hah! Swarmy Smaug. I sort of like that.

See my reply to gini above about why. I was watching him on Boston Legal and it came to me while he was doing one of his "why am I speaking to you, you insect?" moments. I could just hear him taking Bilbo apart with that voice, and it struck me how awesome he'd be at it.
