I told my husband, to whom I have been reading this series, which he loves, that I'm not sure if I can read him that last one! (For one thing, I have to stop laughing long enough to breathe, and then I'll need to take a few days for my ribs to stop hurting...)
I heard that expression as a young child in rural England, and wondered at the time why my mother's lies explanations sounded so stilted and unconvincing, and why she turned such a very interesting shade of annoyed pink and changed the subject as quickly as possible.
It was a brilliant way to break through Frodo's unhappy walls, at least for a little. I can't wait to see the next chapters!
