Roommates

.
I've been led to understand that some of you are not acquainted with my roommates...

This is Casey.

In 2002, my Nebula died.* She'd been with me for 18 years, had moved to Santa Cruz and back with me. I was devastated. For two years, I was without any animal in my home. It was lonely.

Then in 2004, I started thinking about getting another cat. My sister-in-law called me and told me a friend of hers had found a six-month-old kitten abandoned by the neighbors who'd moved away. I went over to meet her and it was click at first sight. She jumped right up into my lap and came home with me that day.

Now, this is Frodo.

Frodo came to me in 2010. I was walking home one day and barreling out of an alleyway came this tiny little thing. It planted itself squarely in front of me, opened its mouth and began DEMANDING that I take it home. "I am on a Very Important Quest and you must help me!" he yelled. "I need food and shelter! THE WORLD DEPENDS ON IT!!!" What could I do? I picked him up - it seemed to be a he. He was small enough to fit in one hand, skinny and flea-raddled, clearly not owned by anyone. I immediately took him to a vet office a couple of blocks away and asked that he be scanned. He had no chip, which I really didn't expect him to have, and so I took him home. He is no longer tiny, but a bit bruiser of a cat, a fierce hunter, and patrolman of our property, a job he takes very seriously.

Those be my two roommates. They are good company, in their cat way, meaning they're around when they're around, and when they're not, they're not. Casey mostly stays indoors while Frodo mostly stays out. It's comfortable and equitable, and fitting for a old pagan hippie woman like myself. :)

She was a bit weird, but I loved her.

Frodo is kind of tuxedo-like (like my Merlin). They are very demanding cats when it comes to affection! :)))

Well, Frodo is a street cat, so although he is very patient with affection, he almost never requests it. He'll put up with hugs all day, but is always glad when I put him down. You should see his expression when my five-year-old niece decides to carry him around. :D

Merlin started out as a street kitten, but he was found by his previous owner. Then by the time I got him, he was a complete lovemuffin (he will PUSH my laptop off my lap so that he can snuggle in my lap, lol.

Oh gosh, there is a special place in kitty heaven for cats who tolerate small children, lol!!!!

Thank you for sharing your furry roommates with us! I didn't know you had kitties. They're very very adorable.

Oh yes, always. Those two years after Nebula died were the only time I've ever lived without a cat around (or a pet of any kind). I had no idea how much of my ability to be content was bound up with the presence of an animal - I was miserable in ways I'd never been before. Casey was such a relief when she came along. (I have posted about her before, but it's been a long time since I mentioned her, I think.)

Aww, it's nice to meet your roomies! They are both lovely kitties.

Nebula was a beauty.

They are pretty nice to have around. Nebula was neurotic as hell, but terribly sweet. When she was a little kitten, the black patches in her calico had little white "stars" strewn through them (that went away when she got older), so her coloring looked like an actual nebula. Thus her name. She was my little interstellar dust cloud. *sniff*

I am a cat person, too. They are my favorite animal and I've always had cats...ever since I was a child. They have all been strays, offspring of strays or adopted from shelters. I currently have five who are all indoor cats. I live in the wild, next to a national forest and there are too many predators to let them go outside. Meet (from the top): Compton, Eric, Dancer, Spunky and Sam. Compton, Eric and Sam are brothers born to a stray I fed who was caught by a predator when the boys were tiny so I moved them indoors. Dancer and Spunky are brother and sister.

LOL Yes, it is. They pile up like that in cold weather, never in summer though.

Oh my, what a tribe! Life must never be boring at your house, I'm sure. :)

You got that right !

Oh I love your kitty room mates! They seem to me to resemble their namesakes in a sort of way (if Frodo was wearing his hood, perhaps?) Anyway they're adorable with lots of spirit, by the sound of things. Thanks for letting us see them, I hope they will visit sometimes :-) xxx

You're welcome! They are sweethearts. And you can basically assume that they are present in anything I post. You know, cats being owners of the world and all.
