We do not live in the world we are working to make. That world does not exist. That is why we work to make it. The world we are working to make will never be made. It will always be out of reach. That is why we must keep working to make it. It is an unreachable goal, as perfection is always unreachable. But it's the effort to reach it, to make that world we will never make, that will improve the world we do live in, the world here and now.

We will never make that world, the world we are working to make, but we will make this world better.

I felt much better yesterday after listening to Dan Savage's podcast, in which he reminded us that in 2004 Bush was re-elected and several states voted down same-sex marriage; and he literally went home and burst into tears at the time, and he and his boyfriend seriously considered moving out of the country. But then in 2008 Obama won, and in 2015 we got national same-sex marriage, and that was all because people didn't give up in trying to do the right things. There is hope yet! Just a lot of crap to get through on the way. But I guess there always is.
