Japanese TV is beyond weird.

Highly bizarre. Combination language lesson and aerobics class, I assume? I love the choice of bridge moves - especially the office worker one where they stick out their busts, and the running away from the armed robbers.

Yep. From what I gather, these little vids are actually from the end of the show, where they sum up what's been learned. In the main part of the show, the exercises are split up and placed between sections that re-enact the situations, so you can see how the phrases would be used in real life. So it's not quite as bizarre as it looks.

"Take anything you want."
The mind boggles.

"Don't make fun of me."
Sorry. Impossible.

"You drive me crazy."
The feeling is mutual.

They are strange, aren't they? I love them, though. The cute bounciness combined with the rather serious phrases make quite an infectious package; whenever I find a new one of these, I hear it repeating itself in my head for hours!

I remember the first time I went to Japan ... I got to my hotel and turned on the TV to relax for a bit. There was a childrens' cartoon on. It was of one character pulling out another character's intestines. Yes, I said 'intestines.' I'm afraid it influenced my perception on the Japanese people.

And the game shows! No doubt about it, the culture is quite different from the Western. A friend of mine who watched Lost in Translation said she couldn't get past how "silly" and "fake" the Japanese talk show looked. I had to disabuse her of that notion as gently as possible. Then I played Silent Library for her, and her eyebrows practically shot into space!
