Decorating trees for Solstice predates Christian influence, if I remember correctly. You can tell him you're lighting the way for the Sun to return. :)

I like that idea. I figure I'll explain that the Christian tradition merged with many a pagan solstice tradition, and basically it's an excuse to give presents and eat pie.

That reminds me, I actually looked up Christmas tree origins one year. Seems the greenery tradition is pagan enough, but the actual decorated tree was more Christian than I thought. Still, close enough!

Well, considering how many year traditions were ripped off by Christianity, I figure we can take something too. After all, just about every Christian I know still scratches her head about the bunnies and eggs at Easter, LOL!
