Request for help

Over the last few months, I've been building up the resources to start doing my own recordings at home. I have a new computer, recording program, and I recently bought a headphone/microphone combo. Everything's in place, but I can't get the recording to work.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm using Audacity to record, which program came highly recommended. I know the headphone thingy works because if I play a sound file, I can hear it just fine. But I can't get anything recorded. I imagine it has something to do with the Audacity settings, but since I know nothing about this kind of program, and I don't know anybody who can just come over and show me how to do it, I'm at a loss.
Does anybody know this program? Do you know anybody who does? I feel like I'm bashing my head against a wall here. Help?
