Kerfuffle de Jour

.
For all you good folks freaking out about the FB/Twitter Thing:
You do realize, don't you, that commenters have ALWAYS had the ability to repost their comments elsewhere? All they have to do is COPY-PASTE.
Just like everywhere else on the web, with anything else on the web.
All LJ has done is add a button that makes it a one-click deal. But it's not anything that's been impossible before.
So all this mass exodus is kind of an over-reaction, don't you think? I mean, considering that if anyone wanted to cross-post their comments here, they've probably already been doing it.
Me, I don't have no truck with stupid crap like Facebook and Twitter, and I no longer post anything that's in the least identifiable here, so I really don't give much of a shit about my stuff being re-posted. But I just thought I'd point this out.

Date: Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 07:55 pm (UTC)*shrug* I don't think it's worth leaving LJ over, but I'd rather it didn't copy comments from locked entries with a single, unthought-out click. Maliciousness you can't guard against, but carelessness is preventable.

Date: Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 08:12 pm (UTC)What LJ has done is integrate their identity management with the Facebook platform via the Facebook Connect API. This ties LJ's business model to Facebook's, which is what I object to, not the fact that it provides an easier way for people to copy-and-paste between social networking applications.
People are freaking out because a) that's fandom; we do drama but also b) Facebook is the crappiest of all privacy-violating businesses for LJ to be hitching its wagon to. It represents a change in the culture of LJ, and given Facebook's track record with privacy I think people have every reason to be concerned about it.

Date: Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 10:11 pm (UTC)I do see the problems as mentioned by others. But the fact remains that you've always, always got to be cautious about what you put online. And, if you ask me, find your drama OFFline. It's much healthier.

Date: Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 10:15 pm (UTC)That's why I've never used my real name or published my address or phone number or anything else that could identify me. If I want to stay in touch with friends or family, that's what e-mail is for. Shit like Facebook is just narcissism, as far as I'm concerned; it's the PUBLIC nature of it that people crave, not the communication or the convenience. And that is exactly what gets them into trouble. So if their egos and craving for recognition trump their common sense, well, them's the breaks. *eyeroll*
