RIP, dear Candy Man


“The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him ‘there’s Willy Wonka,’ would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion,” his nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, said. “He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.”


Age 83, of Alzheimer's.

Every night for ten years on New Year's, my brother made me watch Young Frankenstein. I still don't get it but I love that man. He had the most brilliant joy.

Have you seen the originals? Because it doesn't make sense unless you know the source material. As a kid I watched those old horror movies on local TV in the afternoons after school, so when YF came out, I loved it to pieces. (Same with Blazing Saddles - it's far better if you're familiar with the old Westerns.)

I'm so sad, but I love that line about not wanting one less smile in the world. His work has inspired countless smiles and will do so as long as those films exist. Absolute hilarity and talent and sweetness.
