I'm planning on doing a friends list cut soon, so if you want to remain, please comment here.

Considering the direction things have taken on LJ for me, I'm actually thinking about abandoning this LJ entirely. It seems the only posts that get lots of traffic are my fic posts, and while I love getting the feedback, that's not the only reason I'm here. Maybe I've worn out my welcome, who knows. It's not like it would be the first time that had happened. It's not that big a deal for me, but I'm a little tired of posting things I think are really cool, only to get very little or no response at all. Starts to seem a waste of time, you know?

So I may end up closing this LJ to everything except fic posts (and those will probably be few on the ground), and taking up another LJ that won't have the baggage associated with it that this one does. Plus fandom isn't really my thing anymore, so there's that too.

Any thoughts?

I think everyone goes through phases where they don't get a lot of comments. I'm going through one myself. But you have to realize that just because things aren't getting commented on doesn't mean they aren't being read. The way my life is right now, I can barely skim my f-list let alone comment on very many entries. The entries I usually comment on are ones where I can just give a quick comment, rather than something I actually have to think about, because usually I don't have the time. That's the thing that sucks about LJ, is that you end up building up so many "friends" and then can't keep up with them all, you know? I got to a point once where I had like 200 people on my flist, and the ones who were supposedly closest to me were getting pissed because I was missing important things in their lives. Even now, my flist is pretty small, and I still have a hard time keeping up. And I know a lot of my friends go through the same thing, so I try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

As for me and you, I know we haven't really been able to bond much, but I like you and find you interesting outside of your fic. I don't even read LotR fic anymore, because it reminds me of the clusterfuck that fandom was for me, and I just don't even want to go there. I think I friended you over the momentary Brandon Routh crush, heh. But I would love to stick around, and if you change to a more personal journal and leave this one for just fic, I'd friend your other one and probably defriend this one.

Oh yeah, I realize that. It's a common LJ thing. But this has been developing for nearly a year now, and the majority of people who used to come by here a lot never comment anymore on anything. It's been a big sea change, and I figure it's time for a change. So the f-list cut will be first, and then I'll see what happens. As it is, there are things that have happened in my life recently that I would have posted had they happened 3-4 years ago, but now I don't, because there doesn't seem to be much point.

Thanks for responding, though. You'll stay in. :)

Hi :)

Starts to seem a waste of time, you know?

Aye, can see that. One reason (other than my bad habit) for not commenting on a lot of things is that I've almost completely stopped following links from posts since a distressingly high number of sites linked to 'kill' my computer. (I know this is my computer's problem, but still....)

It may be a good idea, for your own peace of mind, to do a new LJ. Most of the people I've seen do this over the years have been glad for it. If you do move, I'd love to come with.

*hugs*

Not sure what I'm gonna do later on, but I'm thinkin' on it. Thanks for letting me know about the computer thing. I'll make sure to copy out text stuff for those who don't want to follow links.

Yay for YIM, yes. Although I'm almost never on that computer anymore :/

Copy/paste of relevant text would really be appreciated :)

I’m probably in a minority, but I’ve never understood why people change journals as a result of changes in fandom participation when LJs (unlike message boards, for example) are “you centric” and evolve along with one’s interests. Of course some people will have only friended a journal for one specific type of post, so the fact that there’s always going to be a time lag between changing interests and aquiring new and enthusiastic members of your FL means that the level of responses to posts will wax and wane - but I’d prefer living through the lean times to having all the hassle of upping sticks and start all over again.

LJ – ideal home of the terminally lazy!

Date: Saturday, September 9th, 2006 12:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com
One of the reasons I've seen people do it is that LJs acquire baggage. I've seen friends lists get poisoned with resentment and bitchiness against people, and I can totally understand why a person would want to flee from that to a fresh space.

Date: Saturday, September 9th, 2006 07:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ghyste.livejournal.com
I can understand it if you have problems on your old LJ that can't be resolved, but most of the instances I've witnessed/experienced are people saying "I've done with this fandom, I'm off to be someone else in a new one". That always strikes me as odd, because nearly everyone has interactions with the people on their lists that go beyond the fandom they happen to share.

Anyhow, I hope you'll leave me on the list.

From: [identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com
Oh yes, I'll keep you on!

I fled a fandom in just that way - the Keanu fandom. I used to go under a different handle in those days, but there are some SERIOUSLY crazy, ugly people in that fandom, and there was nastiness (stalking behavior and such) that I witnessed, and I wanted shut of it. (Not here on LJ, though. I didn't hit LJ until I was well into LOTR.) My LOTR handle is different mainly so that none of the batshit crazies from Keanu fandom would follow me. And believe me, some of them would.

Sounds nasty! Fortunately, on the rare occasions that I have come to the notice of the less sane elements of fandom they have discovered there's very little mileage in baiting someone as relentlessly tedious as me :)

I'm bad at commenting, but I always find your posts interesting. I like your point of view and the uncompromising way you have of stating it. Of course, I first started this LJ thing because of LOTR, (actually, at your suggestion) but there's a lot more to life that that (both yours and mine), and I'd miss you if you went.

Date: Saturday, September 9th, 2006 12:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] serai1.livejournal.com
I know a lot of people just don't comment in general (I'm bad that way too at times), so I don't blame anybody for it. It's just that it can get a bit disheartening. That's probably my problem, but I have to act on things like that or I'll lose heart altogether, you know?

Ah, LOTR. The funny thing is that, despite my not being interested in fandom much anymore, I'm still very interested in LOTR. Just got done reading a really lovely book that communicates just about everything I feel not only about Tolkien, but about modernism and the state of the world vis a vis our relationship to nature. It's called Defending Middle Earth: Tolkien, Myth & Modernity, by Patrick Curry. I highly recommend it!

Date: Saturday, September 9th, 2006 05:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fantasy-fan.livejournal.com
True. "fandom" and "LOTR" are very different things. I still spend time reading fic, when I can find good ones, but many authors have moved on or lost the muse. Fandom isn't the same as it was before. In some ways it's better, because the ones who are left seem to be the people who are really interested in LOTR, not the ones who turned out to have a passing interest because of the movies. I actually enjoy, in a quiet sort of way, getting to know the people behind the stories. There is so much in Tolkien to draw from, and everyone who immerses themselves in that fascinating and multi-layered world finds something unique and personal that resonates with them. The essential goodness of a simple and innocent life. The nobility of personal honor and sacrifice. The bonds of friendship and need that relate all peoples in a common struggle. There's so much to choose from!

I'll have to try to pick up the book you've recommended, to add to my (overflowing) Tolkien shelf. It sounds like something I'd definitely want to read.

Well, I've always enjoyed your posts, esp. the political commentary ones. And of course I enjoy your fic. I'm just not commenting a lot anywhere, kinda sucked up in my own morbid issues.

I hope you keep this LJ, because I do read it. I read my whole flist, and some days, it's a great comfort to know there's a normal/not so normal world out there where life is going on and people are doing things. Even if I'm not physically a part of it. Most fandom stuff is dying down but not drying up - I think hobbit stuff is still going strong.

I hope I can stay, I hope you stay, but mostly I wish you peace with your choice.

Yeah, I know you and I don't comment much to each other anymore because of our interests drifting apart. I understand that perfectly. But you do pop up now and then when I post about weird crap, so I know you're around. It's the people who never EVER say anything that I figure just aren't interested anymore. After all, I'm not a mind reader, and if I'm not getting comments, there's no way for me to know that anybody's even reading.

For example, I spend a lot of time and thought on my movie reviews. But if I post one and get no responses, as has happened a couple of times, I'm inclined to think, "OK, fuck this. Why should I make this kind of effort if nobody gives a shit?" Sure, a lot of people may be reading them, but how am I supposed to know that? If there are a bunch of responses, then it's not that important whether there's more comments. (I'm not a complete beggar for feedback.) But if nobody comments, or if I get one comment that says nothing really relevant to what I posted, it starts to seem pointless, as I mentioned.

I think one of the nicest things LJ could offer its users would be hit optional hit counters for our pages, so that if we wanted to know if a post is getting read, we could tell.

I think you should do what you need to do so that you find a comfortable place- my old LJ wasn't anymore and I don't regret walking away from it. I don't comment like I should but that doesn't mean I don't read. I prefer not to comment about politics and religion posts because I don't like to argue with anyone, and I don't keep up with the same fandom stuff that I used to anymore, obviously. Its likely that most of the people that I did retain from [livejournal.com profile] undone27 are bored out of their minds scrolling past my pointless pimping of cheesy jpop. Then again I was pretty annoying over Elijah too ahahaha. *dorkdorkdork*

Anyway. Do whatcha gotta. I'm still the same and so are you even if time moves us around a bit.

I'm here because I like you. Even though I don't comment much anymore, when I have time to read Live Journal, I am always interested in what you have to say, regardless of the subject. There are times when I can only read late at night when I'm exhausted and so brain-dead that my responses would be insultingly numb.

I would be sad to see you disappear. I would also be sad if you decided to drop me, so I hope that you won't. I don't think you've worn out your welcome, but I can speak only for myself. If you do start another journal, I would be delighted and honored if you'd friend me there. Whatever your choices about your journal, I wish you joy and every good thing (even though that may sound mushy). I shall be thinking of you, and hoping very much that we shall meet again.

I began commenting less because a while back I emailed you and you never replied and then I left a comment in your LJ and you never replied, but you talked to others, so I wasn't sure if you wanted me around.

I do read your posts though and I like learning more about the US and the stupid Bush government, I don't watch the news much and I find out some interesting things from your links. I also don't comment sometimes because I'm still trying to understand everything I'm learning about the government over there and I'd rather wait until I had something salient to say.

So I'd like to stay if I'm wanted, it's up to you :)

Well, I hope you decide to stick around, because I like reading your posts. I go through phases where I'm very bad about commenting in anyone's LJ, not to mention posting in my own.

Like someone else said, I often don't click on links to video, because I have dialup and it takes too long. But I do read what you post! In fact, I'm always happy to see your posts on my flist, because I know it will be interesting.

Your movie reviews, in particular, are wonderful. I haven't commented on all of them, but I do read and appreciate them. :-)

I think it's great for people to ask for what they want--and sometimes you even get it, hehe. So good for you!

Like many of those above, I'm a casual user and don't even post on my own LJ that much. I'm not really sure why but I guess I am basically pretty private about my work life and paranoid that somehow my comments might end up in the wrong hands. And unfortunately, my work life is my main life right now and too valuable to risk.

So I really do enjoy the escape I get in bouncing along my flist. But to be honest, I oven skip over many of them because they seem to be bogged down in areas that I have no interest in. But I rarely skip your posts (just so you know). I find your political rants great (and it's good to know that you are as incensed as I am about some things). I enjoy the other things too--although I can't comment on movie reviews since I rarely go to movies, and am not much of a vid person either. You are one of the strongest-minded people on my flist (without being arrogant or stuffy) and I really like that.

I guess I don't comment very much because you often have "said it all" as far as I am concerned and--perhaps this is just me--but I don't feel the need to just say, "I agree." I rarely post anything short so if I don't have that much to say (or the energy to say it at the time) I usually just smile, nod, and move on.

But you have got me thinking about making the small effort to just "agree" and support people who have taken the time and energy to bring up a subject and share their thoughts. So that is "food for thought" for me this morning.

But in the meantime, please do keep me on "the list" and I will endeavor to comment more frequently--and I wouldn't say this if I didn't value reading your journal. It is the least one can do. :)

I visit lj even less often these days, so I tend to miss a lot (like this post--I'm glad you reiterated it) but you are one of the people that, when I read, I DO read. No hard feelings, however, if you don't want to put up with my lack of involvement; I've always found it difficult to comment in the lj environment and that's my problem, certainly not yours. :) Either way, take care.

Here's the problem. When you post about American politics, I go bzuh because I don't know the players, I don't know the scenes, I don't know the rules, and my head is pretty much crammed with Indonesian politics, for all that it's rubbish. I don't see that many movies, but I read your reviews, and sometimes I wanted to comment, but often you've said everything already and like Celandine, I have nothing intelligent to offer but words between asterisks. Like Princessofgeek, I can't very often link to streaming video posts because I'm on dialup. So, yeah, I haven't been commenting. I'd like to stay on your flist, but that's pretty much up to you. And you know, I have a feeling that if you start a new lj, the people in your old lj will simply friend that one too. :)
