So I just started watching Penny Dreadful and holy fucking Goddess, WHEN did Josh Hartnett get so unbe-fucking-lievably SEXY? Seriously, the man has me drooling. When did this even happen??

I have to confess that I haven't really thought about him in a long time, as he fell off my radar with that painful Wicker Park atrocity. I knew he was out there making movies, but after that debacle, I'd kinda written him off. Which worked out just fine, because now I get to be LAID OUT FLAT by what he's turned into. He's not pretty anymore - now he's interesting, a quality worth far more in an actor. As Valentine Michael might say, he's growing into his own face. It's a wonderful thing to see.

Plus, you know, there's all that fucking SKIN.

Blessed Aphrodite - I never thought I'd get to see this guy's body. Did you notice how for a long while he almost never even took his shirt off for the camera? Now this series keeps throwing these lush sex scenes into the mix, and I'm lying in a pool of sliced tomatoes. (Because you better believe I'm watching this thing in bed.) Wow, his body is beautiful. And he's photographed beautifully, as well. He's definitely the sex object in this series. Considering how much this show has to do with hunger and vampires and devouring, it's almost impossible not to see those scenes as a decadent feast laid out for us. Here you go, ladies - hot, sweet, and juicy. Eat your fill. Oh, I get trembly just thinking about it.

And I'll tell you, I never thought I'd see Josh Hartnett taking another man. OH HOLY BITCH GODDESS. I was hyperventilating, I swear. So fucking hot, but of course the scene didn't go anywhere near far enough - they chickened out and left the guys shirtless and playing tonsil hockey. HEADDESK HEADDESK HEADDESK. But I have hopes we'll see more; I'm only on the sixth episode and I really don't see any indication that sex will be put on the back burner.

Oh my. Just...oh my. What an amazing, lovely, kindling surprise this is turning out to be. The fact that it's just a damn good series all around is icing on the cake, frankly, since I'm so dazzled by what's happened to him. So just assume that I'm rattling off a list of every word for "fucking HOT" you've ever heard. Because I am, at full volume.

P.S. Here is my theory about the brontosaurus: Ethan Chandler is a werewolf. SHUT UP RIGHT NOW. I don't want to hear if I'm right or not. I just wanted to say it, because I am So. Looking. Forward. to his transformation. So if I'm wrong, let me be disappointed on my own.

But I don't think I'm wrong.

Oh, you have no idea. You have noooooo idea...

I don't want to give the impression that the show is a big orgy or anything. But the intersection between sex and death plays a large part, and it's very erotic as opposed to merely sexual. It's a very dark eroticism, too, very much of that Shelley-Keats "half in love with easeful death" era. (Dorian Gray is one of the principal characters. That should tell you something.) And Ethan strides through it, the big American hottie with the sad eyes and the stories he refuses to tell, and GAAAAHAAHAHHHH.

Do get hold of it. It's all over the place, not hard to find. You SO won't regret it. ;)

I am totally with you on the surprise at how hot Josh Hartnett is in Penny Dreadful. I won't say anything about the Werewolf theory, but I will tell you that in season two you get him wearing cuddly sweaters and chopping wood!

I fell in love all over again, watching PD. It's the best thing he's ever done, I think, and he's perfectly beautiful all growed up.

It's amazing, isn't it? I'm watching the second season now, and every time he enters a room, the heat factor goes up. I never associated that effect with him before. I got a hot little charge just from his flirting with the queeny translator - the fact that Ethan smiled and played along, and that Josh did it in such an easy, kind-hearted, and sexy way jammed that hotness quotient up about three more notches.

I agree that this is definitely the best work I've seen out of him. And it's a great example of how intangible that kind of development is - it's hard to pinpoint exactly what's different in his acting, but it's unquestionably far ahead of what he was doing ten years ago. It's depth more than anything else, I think. There's more ground under his feet in this part; there's an actual past, which I never felt out of him before. And he's not working so hard, which was something I always found a bit off-putting about him - the effort was so visible in his acting most of the time. Here he's just being who the character is, without trying to be him. It's like there's someone there now, fully present, not just an actor playing a role. His emotions come up more naturally, he's not as controlled. He's just all-around better, in just about every way.

Oy, I hope this series has a nice long run. It's been renewed for next year, I heard. How my naughty bits will stand it, I don't know, but I'm damn sure willing to find out.

I did. It's the only one I've found from Penny Dreadful. aliensouldream has a new journal called sopennydreadful. It only has a few entries and I keep visiting hoping someone will do more icons, but none so far. I wish I could come up with a fic for the fandom, but I'm still struggling with writers block. Just talking to you about it has made me love it and Ethan/Josh more. Showtime is repeating all the season two episodes today, preparing for the season finale tonight, and I've been wallowing.
