Yeah, okay

Trevor Noah really was funny last night. He's got a sharp sense of humor, puckish, I'd say. He definitely hasn't turned me off, so I'm going to continue giving him a chance.

And he's cheerful. I'm sure it's because he's new to the game, but he seems really up for the nonsense. Jon was really squeezed out at the end - who can blame him? - so Trevor is a big contrast. I'm interested and curious to see where he will go with this.

Also, VERY happy with the new Colbert show. Oh, he is having such a good time. It's lovely to see. And gratifying that he's not lost his punch. His guests are varied and interesting, he's a GREAT interviewer, able to draw out anyone. (Except Trump. He still managed to sound like a jackass.) (Not that that wasn't fun.) And he's brought along some of his TDS/TCR schtick, last night instituting a new segment reminiscent of the dearly departed "This Week In God" from TDS, a segment I always looked forward to, as I'm delighted by really well-educated comic commentary on the doings of religion. Stephen is excellent at that.

Plus, watching him dance at the beginning of every show is utterly wonderful. He can make me smile no matter how bad a day I've been having. *sigh*

I've just had the depressing realization that without Jon and Stephen, my interest in politics has plummeted to nearly zero.

Which actually makes sense, given that I was pretty apolitical when Jon took over TDS. It was really his tenure on the show that got me interested in politics again, which I'd lost since I left Santa Cruz, and even living there in the early 90's, it was local rather than national that interested me. Having Jon, and then Stephen, as guides made it all worth paying attention to, but now that they're gone, it's all just a bunch of fucking white guys yelling at each other again. When they're not yelling at each other, they're bullying the rest of us, and I just can't be bothered.

*sigh*

The End of an Era

So just as I predicted, I'm an emotional wreck right now.

What a wonderful show. Dedicated completely to thanking all the people who worked there over the years to make it one of the best goddamn shows ever produced anywhere.

And the ending... Well, of course, they got Springsteen to close out the thing, and I was already teary, but when he broke out with Born to Run, I just fucking LOST IT. Started crying big time while mouthing the lyrics I've known by heart since I was a shy little teen. It was perfect - Jon introduced Bruce with, "Here it is, my Moment of Zen."

So that's it. First Stephen, now Jon. The end of an era. I know there was a time before TDS existed, but I can't think the future will be anywhere near as bright without Jon's great, wise snark to get us through the nasty sump of this country's insanity, to say nothing of the rest of the world's. I look forward to the next chapter in his conversation with us, but I can't help being sad.

Thanks so much, Mr. Stewart, and bye for now.

Glenn Beck Has Nazi Tourette's - Lewis Black, The Daily Show

This has not been a great week for Glenn Beck. Stop giggling, please.

First, he's rushed to the hospital with appendicitis. (Insert joke about useless organ here.) Poor baby! Imagine the tears.

As always, Jon Stewart has a little something to say on the matter:

The 11/3 Project - Jon Explains It All - Beck Style!

I'm just a concerned American citizen like you, questioning
what's going on inside Glenn Beck...

It's so sad! Why was this lovely young girl pinned to a retaining wall to burn to death - and not Glenn Beck? WHERE IS THE JUSTICE???

From the Daily Show's report on the recent controversy, Jon's handy Swine Flu Vaccine Breakdown chart:

Doubt Break '09

Jon: Has anyone developed a vaccine that inoculates against scaring?

Heeheehee. Beck is happy and eager to scare the shit out of everyone, but he refuses to say whether or not he's going to get the vaccine himself. GEE, WHY WOULD THAT BE? Could it be that he IS getting it, and that would kinda undermine his whole stupid fearmongering crap?

So very typical of him. And you know, he STILL hasn't gone on record to deny that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. I mean, what is up with that? If he's innocent, why not come out and deny it? WHAT'S HE TRYING TO HIDE, HMMM???

Oh Jon, I ADORE you!

I dare you to watch this without cracking up:

Insani-TEA - Rachel Maddow contemplates all that tea-bagging.

The one endearing quality that all these wingnut types have is their adorable cluelessness. They seem never to have learned the meaning of the phrase "basic research". Take, for instance, their enthusiastic co-opting of the term "teabagging". (Check the link if you need to - I'll wait.) They've done dumb things before, but my gods! If the Republican Party had actually tried to come up with a tactic that would ensure they'd be laughed at pretty much everywhere, they couldn't have done a more stellar job than they have here. It could be seen as a kind of snarky poetic performance art - if they hadn't proved time and again that such things are beyond their ken. Irony is a mineral they're woefully lacking in, after all.

In this clip, Rachel Maddow, Girl Reporter, tries valiantly to take the issue seriously, but fails, to our benefit. Really, how can a responsible reporter be expected not to fall on the floor laughing at this sort of drivel? It's the kind of thing you'd expect to see on SNL, as a parody. It's priceless, and the funniest thing about it is, as I mentioned, their complete and utter inability to understand why they're so ridiculous. They're just so CUTE - I wish I had a camera right...oh, wait.

But there's just one thing bothering me. Someone please explain why Jon Stewart hasn't assigned one of his correspondents to do a piece on this. Because it's just MADE for Jason Jones.

ETA: Because nobody does it like the master:

Unusual Suspect - The Daily Show, 2/24/09

Jason Jones learns that when a galvanizing leader captures the public's imagination,

One of the more brilliant reports to come out of TDS, this examination of fundie-mental batshit about our new Prez truly kicks ass. This vid reminds me once again of the whompin' talent of Mr. Jason Jones, who is so awesomely good at rank disbelief.

Check it out and raff!

And here's the interview referenced in the above clip:

I am so DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY that Jon and Stephen are back! *hugs them both*

And you know, I do not miss the writers AT ALL. Yeah, the cute correspondent segments aren't there, but my main interest has always been Jon and Stephen themselves, and SURPRISE! They're actually funny on their own. Odd, that. Wouldn't expect guys who've been doing standup for ten or twenty years to be able to make jokes off the cuff, would you?

From last night's segment with Senior Literary Correspondent John Oliver:

Jon Stewart: John, it always baffles me. Why do people do that, release those things? What is it in the human psyche that just wants to ruin it for everybody? The books have got kids interested in reading, it's sparked ten-year-olds' imaginations around the world. It seems like mean-spirited dickery, quite frankly.

John Oliver: No, not necessarily, Jon. These tattle-tales could be devising some kind of car that runs on the tears of children.
